What is the story now on Sagehen? I know it is a UC project but can one still fish above 89? If so, any reports yet?
Thanks

Sagehen Creek is in fact open to the public west of highway #89. It is available for approximately 3/4-1 mile before it flows out of the lower boundary of the UC Sagehen Research facility. From that point upstream there is no angling.
The regulations here are barbless artificials only, ZERO take.
The new, local Truckee TU chapter has Sagehen Creek, east of 89 to its inflow into Stampede lake on the agenda for special regs and/or inclusion into Wild & Scenic Status consideration.
The key on fly fishing Sagehen creek and other brooks & creeks in the Truckee area is being there with the right flow and water temperatures. This optimum period has about a two-week "window". The caveat while fly fishing Sagehen Creek is that there is a chance of catching more "tree trout" than trout...always look behind & above before making your presentation.

Thanks Frank....Always lots of information from you and always appreciated.
A few years back I fished Sagehen and completely missed any sign of the UC project. I probably fished a half mile or so into their area. Luckily I did not disturb their fish count at all!

Frank, isn't it also OK to fish up near the campground, which is above the UC station? I've seen plenty of folks in that area over the years, and also have gone there to get a quick fix during the early season.

...yes.
The stream is really small above the research facility. It has small brookies. At one time, in the lower reaches as it flows into Stampede, a fly angler angler could score a "hat-trick" of brook, brown and rainbow. A trophy would be 14"; most in the 6"-10" range,
In addition to the "tree trout", another caveat is mosqutos which should be making an appearance...in numbers...soon.

I will continue to contribute to the board if it is pertinent and useful. I enjoy the interaction, as long as it is civil.
I'm inviting the BB community to visit and/or follow my recently started blog :-D (www.flyfishingcalifornia.blogspot.com). I'm having fun with my timely/reliable :^o fly fishing reports, humor, rants, raves, preachings and totally irrelevant "jibber-jabber" (...quote from a flame I received several months ago).
