My Grandson Bill is in town for the weekend. First time I've seen him in years. When I put him on the plane the last time he was as tall as my waist, now he's taller than me. The first thing he asked me was, "where are we going fishing?"

Didn't know how much I missed him until I saw him today.

I'll have him to myself for Sunday.

We're going fishing, somewhere.

I'll take some pics.

Wow, weird weather made for an "iffy" outing. I took Bill to a couple of usually productive spots, one for smallies and another for gills and bass.

You guys who have been wondering about our creek, I can tell you it's still early. Water was a bit high and off colored. No sight fishing here. Quite a few changes since last year but it looks like some good changes. I got skunked, but Bill managed to get the stink off with a little squawfish. We put in at the end of the road.

With not much happening we took us a lunch break, which Bill used as time to skip rocks, then bagged it and headed up to Cameron Park Lake for a chance at some Largemouths.

They're spawning all along the shoreline right now, exciting stuff for a kid, even though the spawners wouldn't bit, they'd follow and look at a fly.
Eventually we did manage a couple, Bill got one then I caught it's twin. Both about 30 feet out from the bank.

Both Bass caught on Olive Wiggletails.

A fun day all around. Bill's casting improved noticeably towards the end of the day, he was able to get out to 30 ft enough to be fun.
Teaching a kid to fly cast is no easy thing though. His Bass came on my Helios 3wt which I gave him while I untangled one of his dozens of snarls. He really took to that rod, maybe there's something to the $700.00 rods that actually makes it worth it.:-k

Nah.

Just got a call and they're back in St. Louis now.

I miss him already.
