Attendance needed at Meeting to save Mokelumne River

EBMUD wants to move ahead with plans to expand Pardee Dam, in order to increase the amount of water available to their district by 2040. This will be detrimental to the Mokelumne River (from http://www.calfish.net/may10/5-1-10.htm) because:

• It’ll flood up to 4,000 ft. of the Mokelumne’s Electra Run during periods of high flows. During low flows that section will be a dead area and the run will be lost.
• It’ll flood the Middle Bar section of the Mokelumne. This will destroy fishing in this section and other recreational use such as white water sports.
• It’ll flood a new area of construction for boat take outs, recreation and parking and river access.
• It’ll start the process of Eminent Domain against local property owners and they will lose their land. Some of this land has been theirs for generations
• It’ll flood the historic Middle Bar Bridge which has just been restored and will require the construction of a new bridge.
• It’ll destroy historic Native American sites which can’t be moved or restored.
• It’ll cut off an emergency route for those living in the area.
• It’ll cause a large loss of income locally because of the loss of the Mokelumne River as a recreational site.

There are two ways these expansion plans can be stopped. One is already in progress, a lawsuit filed against EBMUD by CSPA, Foothill Conservancy & Friends of the River.

The other is to have to the river declared a Wild & Scenic River in accordance with The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System Act of 1968.

On Tuesday, May 10th, there will be a meeting in Jackson, CA hosted by Foothill Conservancy, in conjunction with Delta Fly Fishers, to begin this process. This meeting will be at the Amador County Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Rd at 6:00 PM. PLEASE attend this meeting and help save our Mokelumne River. It is approximately 50 miles from Sacramento, but I know we have members who live in Rancho Murieta and other cities on the way there.

 FYI - I learned of this by reading the newest site devoted to reporting on our fisheries issues: www.calfish.net (http://www.calfish.net) - CHECK IT OUT!
