A slight delay in the report. I think I'll be doing the baja reports in two or three day increments.
Cinco de Mayo.....
Went out yesterday with great expectation and vision of dorado and marlin. Great weather, flat water, very little if any at all wind. After getting bait at the island, we head East towards the "88". After checking a lot of buoys and finding not one dorado, we headed back to the Roca Montana. There had been reports that dorado and wahoo have been in the area... The word "have" says it all. A few skippies were eating but that's not my game.
Didn't feel like a butt kicking so early in the morning. Then we headed to the beach in search of pez gallo and toro's. It didn't disappoint us. Big roosters were eating everything that was thrown in the water, that's if they could beat the lady fish to the sardina.
Towards the end of the morning, I had gone fishless except for some pargo, snappers, lady fish and a small roosters. Around 12:00pm it happened, a HUGE school of Toro's swam by and three panga's started chasing the school. Run and gun.... One boat got hooked up and the other two would follow then another boat got hooked up and we ended up chasing the school towards the island.
Our problem was we were low on bait. Like 7 baits left. And to top that off, I had screwed up my TiCrX 10 wt with a BIG knot in the running line. So I opted to use the 9wt. Jonny found the school and drifted just a head of the pack and started throwing one bait at a time. The boils were huge. Made a cast, nothing. Chase the school, throw a bait, chase the school, throw a bait.. Finally we were down to two baits and he threw both of them and I slapped the fly right on top of the school. FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISH ON!!!!!!
The line was clearing the spool like there was no tomorrow. After he slowed down, I had a 30' shooting head, 150' of 30lb running line and 150 yds of 30lb backing sizzling across the water.
30 minutes later, a 23lb toro to the boat on a 9wt rod. The fish the others caught were a spitting image of mine. On the way back in, I saw one of my boats near the beach taking photo's of a fish. When they got back in, they showed me a photo of a 45lb rooster.
May 6....... Today, another flat day and a bunch of dorado off Punta Perico. But first, most of the people went to fish for some skippes to warm up on the checked the beach for the roosters. We went to the buoys but nothing today. Then to Boca del Alamo, nothing. Then headed to Punta Perico and found some dorado south of where everyone was fishing. First slap on the water, FISH ON landed a 22lb dorado, then caught and released a few more. Then a school of yellow fin showed up and boy, there were a lot of bent rods. One gal was working on a YFT and you'd swear to god she was hooked to the bottom. I let my line sink for 1 minute to get it deep, and on the third strip, my line took off like a bat out of heck. But as quick as it was hooked up, it was off. Thank God or I'd still be out there and not writing this report. The gals fish was 65lbs and 1 1/2 hours to land. Actually she said the captain took over, her boyfriend wanted nothing to do with it
Tomorrow is the groups last day and I'm staying back to make the arrangements for the next group. For the group coming, bring some black and white flies for the Tuna, if you dare
Till tomorrow
