A slight delay in the report. I think I'll be doing the baja reports in two or three day increments.

Cinco de Mayo.....
Went out yesterday with great expectation and vision of dorado and marlin. Great weather, flat water, very little if any at all wind. After getting bait at the island, we head East towards the "88". After checking a lot of buoys and finding not one dorado, we headed back to the Roca Montana. There had been reports that dorado and wahoo have been in the area... The word "have" says it all. A few skippies were eating but that's not my game.
Didn't feel like a butt kicking so early in the morning. Then we headed to the beach in search of pez gallo and toro's. It didn't disappoint us. Big roosters were eating everything that was thrown in the water, that's if they could beat the lady fish to the sardina.
Towards the end of the morning, I had gone fishless except for some pargo, snappers, lady fish and a small roosters. Around 12:00pm it happened, a HUGE school of Toro's swam by and three panga's started chasing the school. Run and gun.... One boat got hooked up and the other two would follow then another boat got hooked up and we ended up chasing the school towards the island.
Our problem was we were low on bait. Like 7 baits left. And to top that off, I had screwed up my TiCrX 10 wt with a BIG knot in the running line. So I opted to use the 9wt. Jonny found the school and drifted just a head of the pack and started throwing one bait at a time. The boils were huge. Made a cast, nothing. Chase the school, throw a bait, chase the school, throw a bait.. Finally we were down to two baits and he threw both of them and I slapped the fly right on top of the school. FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISH ON!!!!!!
The line was clearing the spool like there was no tomorrow. After he slowed down, I had a 30' shooting head, 150' of 30lb running line and 150 yds of 30lb backing sizzling across the water.
30 minutes later, a 23lb toro to the boat on a 9wt rod. The fish the others caught were a spitting image of mine. On the way back in, I saw one of my boats near the beach taking photo's of a fish. When they got back in, they showed me a photo of a 45lb rooster.

May 6....... Today, another flat day and a bunch of dorado off Punta Perico. But first, most of the people went to fish for some skippes to warm up on the checked the beach for the roosters. We went to the buoys but nothing today. Then to Boca del Alamo, nothing. Then headed to Punta Perico and found some dorado south of where everyone was fishing. First slap on the water, FISH ON landed a 22lb dorado, then caught and released a few more. Then a school of yellow fin showed up and boy, there were a lot of bent rods. One gal was working on a YFT and you'd swear to god she was hooked to the bottom. I let my line sink for 1 minute to get it deep, and on the third strip, my line took off like a bat out of heck. But as quick as it was hooked up, it was off. Thank God or I'd still be out there and not writing this report. The gals fish was 65lbs and 1 1/2 hours to land. Actually she said the captain took over, her boyfriend wanted nothing to do with it

Tomorrow is the groups last day and I'm staying back to make the arrangements for the next group. For the group coming, bring some black and white flies for the Tuna, if you dare

Till tomorrow

Hey Guys/Gals,

Don't leave home without it, no not the American express card - I'm talking about some Black and White flies (tuna tux) patterns or B&W clousers. This is the #1 fly for the butt kicking yellow fin that are off Punta Perico right now. They are maybe 300 yards from the rocks. There's also dorado and HUGE pargo. Ya might pack a 400 or 500 grain line to get deep for the tuna, a heavy stick and a lot of muscle.

I'm working on a short video as we speak. I have the day off to do paper work and get caught up on my videos'. The group is on their last day and already plan on coming back with at least 12 to 14 people next year. there deposits have already been paid.

I have given out two big pins already.

I'll try and post a couple photo's later this afternoon and possibly a short video tomorrow

Jay, you *&*&^%$$. I had some work to do today and you are making it tough. I have a few black and white tuna tuxes and maybe I'll tie up a few b&w clousers. What size hook? We have lots of smoked red, coho and king salmon. Phil

Damn, bring me a bunch of smoked salmon. I need to change the diet... Fish taco's everyday can get boring. Rancho Viejo and Buffalo has become the favorite places to eat, for this group. Buffalo has something new called the Kansas steak. We saw this guy eating one those and it looks like a quarter of a cow. I think the guys are going there tonight for the grand finale. Sounds like they are going to tie one on since they don't have to get up and 4:30am. Just as long as they keep there cool and don't get thrown in the Mexican jail.
A pretty good group.

See you soon, like tomorrow afternoon. See you at the airport

Hey Jay
You mentioned the bait was big this year. Do we need a big Tuna Tux or very small like October? See ya tomorrow, dinner at Rancho Viejo!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bait yesterday was about average size. I've seen it as large as 6" but most around
3 1/2". I would say the tux should be around the 3 1/2" size.
The temperature here in La Paz is 36 celcius (96 degrees) La Ventana 90 degrees with wind speed 6 mph NE.
Do you gotta bring a jacket? :-)

Possibly tomorrow 37 or 98 degrees, Dang, ya gotta love this weather

Fishing report to follow shortly

You Alaska boys better come equipped with the warm weather clothes. Like last year, this is way beyond your imaginable summer time

Darian,

I just picked up the new TFO trolling/spinning rod and looked at it. I almost went to the dark side and was going to put on a live bait hook tied to a 50lb florocarbon leader with the 50lb pink braid. Even that stick looked under gunned. Maybe, just maybe I'll try it next week, or let some one else do the dirty work.

Gotta run, I'm editing some of the video footage I took this week

See you in a couple weeks

Yesterdays fishing was pretty good for some and not so for others. There's lot's of dorado, tuna and toro's in the area. Most of the dorado were in the punta perico area. The big tuna are hanging around eating the bait. The dorado put on the aerial show and the Jack's just kick a$$.
The weather has changed from the mild temps to the high number temperatures. Very little if any winds the past few days.
Looking forward to my next group that will be arriving this afternoon

Back to working on the video

Hey Jay, How has the fishing community recieved Cerralvos "new name". It kinda seems like a joke, is it seen that way by the locals?

Most of the locals and most fishermen still call it Cerralvo island. Someone paid some big bucks to have it renamed
