Hey Everyone....It looks like it's going to be a beautifull weekend and I was thinking about taking my 13 year old daughter out on her first fly fishing trip. The problem is I don't know a decent area to go. I live in Fallon and I would be willing to drive up to 2 hours to take her somewhere that she would have a decent chance at catching a fish and is safe.

Some of the areas I have in mind are some of the Truckee river parks like Mayberry or Crystal Peak but I am worried about the flows. I was thinking about Pyramid but I know this weekend is the Pyramid fest and my guess is it will be really crowded on the good side of the lake (Pelican) and she might not like it or get bored just standing in one place casting?

Do any of you have any suggestions on where I can take her? She has waders and boots so I'm open to wading also as long as it's a safe area. I want to keep her interested that way I have a fishing buddy.

Maybe try the East Carson. I saw it last weekend and the flows were near perfect. They come up fast though. Alternatively, you might try a real brimming pond, with loads of eager panfish and bass. I think it's critical for kids to hook up quicky and frequently to avoid the boredom factor. I've seen that be the end of many Jr. fishing buddies, including 3 of my own kids.

Good Luck,
Steve

I agree about them getting bored that's exactly what I don't want. I would love to try the E Carson with her but I dont think it opens for fishing till the end of this month.

While I made the mistake of not getting my girls into fly fishing ealry enough, you should really think twice about taking my advice.

But with that in mind, I wouldn't bring a rod for myself so it is all about her experience, and maybe even consider a rod-fee fishing situation - stocked ponds, etc. Catching a lot of fish, having dad net them and then getting a picture of her and her fish may really spark her interest.

Again, just my 2 cents.

Try Steamboat Slough. In the summer it can get kind of rank but this time of year it can fish amazingly well and you never know what you're going to catch. A kid's paradise - carp, sunfish, bullhead, bass, trout, frogs, snakes, turtles. . . swamp fishing, wear hippers.

Call NDOW and get a planting schedule for the Helms Pit and Washoe Lake. She won't get bored.

Good advice so far. There's gotta be a reservoir around there somewhere. How about Lahontan Reservoir or local ditches/ponds :?: :?: you might call Reno Fly Shop for info as well.... :D

Thank you everyone. Where is Steamboat Slough? Hopefully we will have some pics to share of her holding some type of fish.

We ended up at Crystal Peak Park this weekend and next weekend I think were going to give the California side a try or a stocked pond somewhere if I can find one. We fished for about 3 hours in the moring my daughter got 2 bites one on a nymph under an indicator and the other on a BWO she missed both of them but was excited to have a bite at all. The bite on the BWO was almost right in front of us. She was looking at me while I was talking with the fly sitting about 5ft out in front of us. I saw the fish come up and hit it and when I told her to set the hook it was to late.

We were standing just outside the fast current in the water and she got a tangle in her line. I tucked my pole under my arm and helped her untangle hers when I went to grab my pole it was gone. I quickly escorted her to the side of the bank and I made my way slowly down the river looking at the bottom for my pole. Thankfully it got caught on some rocks about 150 yards down stream. The only reason I was able to see it in the water was because I was indicator fishing and I spotted the indicator. That would have been a costly mistake. Overall we had a great day and she was the one with the bites today.

I'm sure it is just nice to get out, one on one, with each other.

I really remember the times my dad took us boys barbecuing, fishing and swimming at Lake Natomas and Folsom Lake.

"One on one" with one anyone you love is special time.

Light blue waders, how cute. That is one pretty smile on your daughter digger, I can not wait to see her holding a big 'ol fish.

Very nice picture. I think fast moving water is a challenging place to start but looks like she was game judging by the smile on her face. Hopefully you'll locate a nearby pond with some nice bluegills in it that'll give more consistent action. In any event, sounds like she had fun. :)

Thank you guys....Hopefully I will have a wall full of pics of her holding fish. Maodiver...thank you very much for that link. I did not know that even existed, it's going to be a big help now that fishing season is upon us.

Hey Digger,

She's a cutie, you're gonna be in trouble in a few years, especially with that smile. My grandpa is giving me his M1 rifle, he never turned in at the end of WWII. So it's unregistered, let me know if you need to borrow it when she starts dating :)

FYI, I need it back my daughters only 2 but I fear a necessity for it in the future.

In all seriousness good stuff getting out with you girl, I can't wait till mine gets older and I can try and get her interested.

Hey
DryflyChico,
That's a very nice offer. We decided that once she get's into high school were going to just keep her in the house. Were only going to feed her fried foods and lots of carbs. We want to make sure she gets little to no exercise and we also want to teach her poor personal hygene. Hopefully this will be a sure fire way to keep the boys away. Seeing her interest in learning fly fishing has made me a proud father. I can hardly wait till she gets her first fish on the fly.......

HaHaHa, Nice, I'll have to remember that when my little girl gets older.

Make sure and get her into a fish soon.

Cheers

you already messed up your plans for her teenage years....you taught her to fish. A good lookin' gal, who fishes, is gonna have you tearin' your hair out with all the boys she'll meet. Best off to set down the guideline that she doesn't date anyone you haven't met, and shown the gun collection to.
