Wash DC Info needed

I'll be in DC in two weeks and was hoping to fish in Alexandria, Virginia where we'll be staying with family. Not really wanting to fish the bay or use a guide. I prefer smallish creeks and streams for trout/smallies. Anyone here have any ideas or pointers? Any help would be appreciated. I can't find a single website forum similar to this fine site, or Washingtonflyfishing. Help.

The Potomac is supposed to have some smallmouth and the Virginia streams should
be starting the annual shad runs. The James River to the south is still clouded from
recent storms - they haven't been able to activate their shadcam.
