I fished with RJ's Fly Trips (Ryan Johnston) on March 31st. With me was Brad Bohen, a guide from Hayward, Wisconsin who is wintering in Sacramento.

I had a trip scheduled with Ryan January past that was blown out and my partner for that trip couldn't make it this time. I had met Brad through this forum and wanted to show him the Trinity and Lower Sac. He spent the day before and after this trip on the T and, though the fishing was slow, I believe he was duly impressed and will be back next winter at a better time for steelhead. I'd picked up a few nice browns in the 14-16" range on dries (Callibaetis) on Sunday but Monday, when Brad showed up, the weather had taken a turn for the worse. He did manage a small (14") rainbow on a small dry Kinkenhammer in the middle of a rain even, so it was not all for naught.
The float on the Sac was intended to start at Anderson park and finish at Ball's Ferry, but as we shuttled down to Rooster's Landing it was evident Cow Creek had blown out the night before and we returned to Anderson and brought the boat up to the Bonneyview launch. I also realized I'd left my shell with my license in my trailer in Lewiston, so we had to stop at the Fly Shop and get a 1-day license (#$%@&*%!).
The morning started out slow and we were crossing our fingers as there were some ominous clouds working their way up from the south, but they moved eastward and looked like they were hammering the Manton/Shingletown area. From Clear Creek down the fishing improved as the day progressed. We ended up with over 20 to hand, numerous LDRs, a Pikeminnow and a tailhooked sucker that gave Brad a shot of adrenaline for a few until he realized what it was. Considering the morning looked fierce and the wind was crazy from all directions, we had an excellent day.
I want to give Ryan a big kudos; he kept the boat perfectly aligned all day in very nasty conditions and rowed back upstream through many runs to rework productive areas. We didn't take out until after 5 PM and this guy earned his money and then some! Additionally, he's a super person and has a great sense of humor, demeanor and way with people. I would strongly recommend him to anyone.
