Fishing Report from Reno Fly Shop:

Pyramid Lake

The fishing at P-Mid has been pretty good over the past month. Once again the fish just seem to be getting bigger and bigger. At least 3 fish have been caught over 15 pounds with a fly rod so far. The reports of fish between 8 and 12 pounds have been coming in daily. Considering the water temperature is still in the 40's the best is yet to come. Fish are being caught on a variety of methods with stripping beetles and tadpoles or nymphing under an indicator with Maholo flies being the most popular. We have all the latest patterns in stock at the Reno Fly Shop.

A few things to consider when fishing Pyramid this spring. The nets are closed until May 15th . The fish are still spread out and can be found on a number of beaches. Pyramid is now a single barbless hook fishery. Don't' forget to pinch down your barbs. If you are fishing out of a floating vessel you may need a boat permit. If it is powered by oars or a motor the fee is $9 a day. Float tubes are o.k. The lake is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. You do not have to fish 5 feet from someone else. If you are fishing a popular beach expect that you will. Our guides spend countless hours on no name beaches in search of fish. Let us help you expand your knowledge of Pyramid Lake. East Walker River

The flows are steady at 23 CFS. This is common for March. The fly fishing has been outstanding both on the Nevada and the California sides of the river. Blue Wing olives have been hatching and there has been some really good dry fly fishing. Nymphing either with a dry dropper set up or using an indicator has also been really good. Warmer weather this week should only improve the fishing. Luckily the East Walker is protected some from run-off and should continue to be in great shape for a while. Flies to try are: Dries- Baetis and golden Stones, nymphs - poxy back stones, mighty mite baetis, pheasant tails, zebra midges and wd-40's. Never fished the East Walker? You are really missing out on a spectacular fishery. Contact us for more information.

Truckee River

The Truckee is in great shape right now from the Boca Bridge area down through Reno. The flows are around 400 CFS but they are starting to yo-yo a little. Warmer weather this week could create some run-off problems so keep an eye on the flows. The Nevada side of the river has been fishing really well over the past couple of months. There have been some really big fish caught on a variety of methods. Brown Trout in the 5 to 10 pound class have been caught as recently as last week. Blue Wing Olives and Skwala Stones have been hatching in the lower river and the dry fly fishing has been great. The weather will have a big in-pact on the river in the months to come due to a decent snow pack. For daily information on the Truckee flows check out the USGS stream flow site.

Davis Lake

This season should be unbelievable at Davis. The lake has been frozen over almost all winter but it is starting to thaw. Ice out at Davis is always a great time to be there. With warmer weather here now Davis should start to really get going. Usually right after ice out fish can be caught using sinking lines in 6 to 12 feet of water. Everything from wooly buggers to snail patterns can be tied on the end. Nymphing with midges and small nymphs can also be effective. Look for Davis to fish well for the next 3 months at least.

Frenchman's Reservoir

Frenchman's should be really similar to Davis over the next few weeks. The warmer weather will thaw out the lake and the fishing should be great right off the bat. Usually the arms and coves provide the best fishing in the early spring. Stripping Wooly buggers and snail patterns with type two sinking line should do the trick.

Little Truckee River

The road to the Little Truckee is not plowed in the winter. It has been impassable almost all winter. It is still in pretty bad shape but it could be accessible very soon. The flows have been at 239 CFS for a while now. If the flows stay in that range the fishing should be really good as soon as you can get there. Usually nymphing is the way to start the season at the Little Truckee. The higher flows will require a split shot or two in order to get your flies down to the fish.

East Carson River

The East Carson River is the most susceptible river in our area to run-off. The flows are currently 131 CFS, but they have been really going up and down. With the air temps headed for the 60's this week, the East Carson will likely be un-fishable. The best fishing on the East Carson is on the back side of the run-off. This year that is most likely to be late May or early June. Go here for up to the minute stream flows.

Billy:
Pyramid report is good - hit it with Jackson this weekend. Cold and windy, whitecaps on Friday and Saturday, straight up beautiful on Sunday - air temps in the 60s? Bobber fishing worked best when there was chop, sinking line fishing worked better when it calmed down. Bobber fishing outproduced everything for us when the sun was up high, regardless of wind or waves. The fishing was consistent and productive.

Flies - the x-mas Mahalo and san juan worm (you sell it at your shop) - the "2457-with-V-rib-wrapped-body" version. Green zonkers, pollywogs, all kinds of buggers, and a few droppers in bright colors. We tried all kinds of varieties of sinking lines - shooting heads, poly leaders, the best for us seemed to be 250 and 300 grain sinktip lines.

Kept the fire going once late afternoon started - nice to warm up before you head out again. Read a recent post on your board about stillwater fishing and keeping the fly in the zone, and yes, we caught a few "rod tip" fish. I agree, but the beach we were at had a small line up and there were a few dudes that could just plain get the bugs out farther. They were consistently into the fish, it didn't matter whether they were bobber fishing or streamer fishing, the bottom line was that they were able to keep the bugs in the water longer. If you primarily fish smaller streams, do yourself a favor, and call up Jeff Putnam and find out for yourself - the above represents our limited experience on the lake.

BTW - the pictures of the sandwiches - that is bow-shot, hand made venison salami and Modelos with heavy doses of lime juice and Tapatio in it. Thank a soldier/vet, ask if you can jump in, and say thank you and please. Get out there now ....
