How many different species have you caught in the Lower American River?

American Shad
Stripers
King Salmon
Steelhead
LMB
Suckers
Squawfish

Rainbow trout (some resident or ones that came out of the hatchery or over the dam?)

Every so often there is mention of some Brown trout being caught too.

I have heard of Crappie in the lower river below Hwy 80.

Sometimes they get Sockeye and Chum salmon in the hatchery that are lost.

I have heard people say they have seen big Sturgeon up in the our river.

What have you caught, seen or heard about?

There is bound to be some type of bluegill or sunfish, whatever the general name is for them.

Hmmm, lets see, in the past few years I've caught,

Striper, shad, steelhead, squawfish, and suckerfish. I think that's it. I've seen carp, bass, and sunfish as well but never caught any. I caught a sculpin in a coke can too if that counts... I picked it up out of the river and it was inside (it's home I presume.... except I had to cut the can open to get him out). Seen smallies down by discovery as well or maybe spots.

I'm posting this for a friend:

Bill:

I've caught everything on your list in the American, and.....

Resident Rainbows
Smallmouth bass
Bluegill
Perch
Crappie
Carp
Sculpin
Channel Catfish
Brown Catfish

We used to gig a lot of Lamprey's. Being that it's a fish, I guess that counts.

When we were kids we heard stories of really big Sturgeon around the bridge supports by Sac State.

I think there are some in Folsom.

As an aside, I caught my first Sea Run Cut on the Klamath this past fall, after twenty five years!

Cheers,
BP

Wow, if that's a Sacramento Perch in that list he's got one nobody else will ever get.

I've seen Bluegill, Green Sunfish, and Largemouth in those backwaters on the south side of the river just downstream from Watt.

I saw a school of Crappie while snorkeling around in the El Manto area years ago.

I saw the Creature from the Black Lagoon down by Howe Ave. just last year.
