Rancho Seco is having it's spring derby this weekend. Is there any interest in having my 1 fly 1 fish tourney this weekend. If so it would be on Sunday and measure in would be at noon.

Let me know what you all think. Even though he doesn't have the trophy, Shig is the reigning champion.

Ah MAN! Is it that time already? I was planning to hit the AR in my futile search for steelies, but I may have to kibosh that for SecoSunday!!

I'm in if I do go bob in the war zone...

Looks like it is on. Measure in is at high noon on Sunday at the back cove near the fish cleaning sink. I will be in a blue Fishcat flaot tube with a rack on the side and a olive colored Kiene's hat on.

I should make it out there Scott. Think it is going to rain once again?

Scott, you are going to start thinking I am avoiding you probably :( not so. Sorry everyone but I won't be making it out there tomorrow. Was looking forward to meeting some of you and being on the water on such a nice day too but somethings come up.

I live in Antelope if someone wants to try out my new tie for me on those planters. I wanted to see what type of response I would get. It is an odd fly, mixed between a hellgrammite and a wooly bugger. Chenille body with bead chain eyes, gold wire ribbing and marabou going across the top into a tail. Was going to try some odd colors together as well, a red body with olive marabou tomorrow.

Anyway, some day I will make it to the 1 fly 1 fish tourney. Have a good time being out on the water. Others will be wishing they were you.

How about posting a picture of your creation for all to admire and ponder?

Didn't make it out today. Somewhat obsessed about getting my first steelie on the two-hand swing. Still skunked. Managed a handful of hatchery clip-fin parolees but my Skagit head probably weighed more than those fish.

So, any reports from today? I wish I could get this chrome monkey off of my back so I can get back to my beloved stillwater!

STFU!! No WAY!! Wow, and here I thought I was being irrational by not going. That's incredible...

I still retain the trophy! (Though I've never even seen it... <lol>)

What a great day for fishing.....and a bad day for catching for some of us....they planted the north boat ramp today, and Scott and myself was a half an hour late for the hatchery truck....by the time we got there it was over.....we found a place in the hog line....and i counted 12 fly guys in floattubes, prams, canoes, and a neat sailing pram.....a few fish were caught but i got zipped.....these trout can't be that smart....thanks for doing the 1 fly 1 fish tourney Scott.

Boys boys boys, you should have been there this afternoon. Well, at least for a certain one hour period. And then you had to be in the right spot for that time.

Phil, (Hawkeye) and I took a lunch break when Scott packed it in. Still no fish at that time. After lunch we we took a trip around the lake. In one cove we split up to check it out. I checked my side and found zip, so I headed over to where Phil was. I spotted him and waved, and he waved back and was pulling his anchor up like he was leaving. Well, he went the other way, further into the cove. Kinda strange, so I went in to see what he was up to.
As I got close he yelled "fish on" and his rod bent. I set my motor to warp speed, which is just about walking speed.

Phil had spotted some trout rising way back in the cove. I moved in next to him and we beat up a school of trout for an hour or so. Several doubles and some fish that actually ran. We each kept a few and released a bunch more before it ended. I've gotta admit, it was looking pretty bleak up til then. We checked out the spot we were casting to and found two deep weedless holes, the fish just stacked up in them for some reason.

We no skunks.

Ya packed it up too soon Scotty!!!!!:p

The shorts curse is no more.....
More like dumb luck really. Like Ed said, we had to do a lot of traveling, and casting. I got lucky and noticed a few rises back in that cove, and it was game on for a while.

Was good to see you on the water again.

Gene, good to meet you.

Did you guys ever see what happens when someone yells "FISH ON' at 'Seco during derby weekend?

Here's the pic of the Rubber Trout I promised you.

The one on top is typical DFG, the middle one, well, it ran and actually made me give some line so I had to respect it a bit more before whacking it.
The larger one had pink meat, but they all grilled up great.

I love the "Goo" on the cleaning table, kind of adds the proper uh, ambiance?
There was a line of cats waiting patiently for us to finish up.

I'm still laughing my arse off at that one. That bank fisherman came running from about as far as you were when I yelled out. All his brush crashing was to no avail though.:D

I wanted to stay and hang with you guys, but since I was not on my pontoon with my trolling motor there was no way in heck I was going to kick around that lake in my float tube.

Phil it was great seeing you out on the water again, I hope it happens more often, I miss you out there. you know almost everytime me and Ed fish together I always bring up "Where is Phil?". It was almost like trying to find Waldo.

Phil,

When you and me and Ed went up to the beaver ponds last summer, you left a box of wet flies in my truck. They've been sitting on my garage bench ever since.

If you don't want 'em, I'll start using them. I seem to recall they had some history....

Work has slowed down some, so I'm trying to catch up on my fishing. Hitting the Delta with my dad on Saturday. Maybe you can convince Ed to take you for a ride in that luxury craft he picked up last fall....

Mike, I'm very sorry I didn't get back to you about those flies. Had some major puter problems for a while, then just plain forgot to call you.

I'll send ya an email if I still have your pm with your address. If not I'll send ya a pm.

Maybe we can get together at the pond there off Prairie City soon.

Mike, I've been shoveling money into that particular hole in the water as fast as I can. I rebuilt the carbs myself and had the water pump replaced, picking it up tomorrow. My limited time was becoming an issue, so I let a pro do the carb adjusting and the water pump.
Trailer's rewired and bearings, 1hub and 1 roller replaced.
I'm still mulling over floor and deck possibilities, but what I have will work for now.

I want to check out KD's tying of his Rat tomorrow, so I'll probably hit the water on Sunday. I'm getting pretty antsy myself.

I'll see you Kiene's tomorrow Ed and then I plan on taking the float tube to Arden pond for some bass. Guppy caught a nice the other day from shore.

Don't worry Phil, that little box of flies doesn't take up much room on my bench. Shoot me an email at mchurchill@downeybrand.com and we can arrange to get them back to you. I haven't fished that pond since last fall. I was just thinking yesterday that the warm weather probably has the bass and bluegills waking up. Time to break out the 3-wt.

Ed, I hope you do better today than I did yesterday. Launched at New Hope about 8:00 and had a nice schoolie blow up on a bubblehead on my third cast--but never felt the fish. That was my only strike all morning. We only fished seriously for about 3 hours, then my wife and kids met us at Wimpy's and we took them for a ride around the Delta. Of course, we saw busting fish while cruising slowly a few minutes into the trip and stopped to cast for a few minutes. My dad got a small schoolie on a lure but nothing wanted my clouser.

I should probably raise this on the warm water forum, but it would be fund to do a pond outing this spring for bass and sunfish at a tube friendly location. (Maybe Cameron Park before the weeds get bad?)

Mike
