View Full Version : Looking for a long #6 travel Spey rod

I live on the other side of the pond, in Europe.
Last summer, I had a professional trip to San Francisco. Managed to get a few days off and went fishing the lower Rogue, beginning of September. Just got half pounders, but in good numbers, swinging flies. Great fighters those HP. I had a great time, and I am looking for more, perhaps in 2011. Now, fishing for them with a 15ft rod and a #10/11 line was a just a little bit on the heavy side.
But saw in a recent thread in this forum that light Spey Rods (# 5/6/7) are becoming more and more popular. So, I could be interest in a #6 Spey rod, but as long as possible (13’6” to 14‘ would be great, the lower Rogue and the Klamath are relatively large rivers in some parts). For travel reasons, it needs to be in 6 sections if longer than 12’6”, 5 sections if shorter than that.
Furthermore would be interested in a #6 medium/long belly Spey line to go along, floating and/or multip.
Is it a tall order?
Thanks in advance for your help

Hey Grilse. Bob Meiser has a couple of rods that may interest you. He has a 13' 9" 6wt in his highlander S series that is a 5 piece. He also has a 15' 9" 4/5/6 under his classic series that is also a 5 piece. As far as 6 piece rods, well cant help you there. Heres a link to Meisers site. It couldnt hurt to give him a call and talk to him about your needs. He often has some rods that arent listed on his site so theres a good possiblility that he may just have exactly what you are looking for. He also has a new group of lines designed specifically for each rod so he can probably set you up with any style of line or lines you may want for a particular rod. Hes a great guy to talk and deal with. Good luck in your search. Kevin

Gary Anderson makes a 13'8" 6 wt 5 piece spey rod that is pretty sweet. You can order it through kienes.

The guys are right. Bob Meiser and Gary Anderson are about the only ones making longer lightweight speys that would be fun to fish for our smaller summer steelhead and half pounders.

Thank you for your comments and help.
The Gary Anderson 13'8" 6 wt 5 piece seems an attractive rod.
However for that length I need it in a six pieces, not 5. Do you know if anyone (Anderson, Meiser, etc) does a good job in changing the number of sections of their standard rods to the demand of the client? Hopefully at an extra cost which is not prohibitive …

I would email or call Gary Anderson @ Anderson Custom Rods in Oregon.
http://www.andersoncustomrods.com/
He might be able to make something custom for you.
Tell him what your maximum length is.
Paulo, I work with Bob and Gary, engineering and developing prototype blanks. I could produce a blank for you but would need to fully understand your casting needs and style. Call me or send an email. stevegodshall@charter.net, 541-840-2594

Well, I do not known exactly who you are, but here it goes.
I´m looking for a 6# spey rod, six sections, perhaps between 13'6" and 14', for swinging traditional wet flies, with both a floating line or a slow sinking tip, medium to long belly, whatever does that exactly means in terms of a #6 spey line. By the way, which lines would you recomend? CDN, Scientific Anglers, Airflo?
The target are HP and the small steelheads of the Rogue and Klamath.

A 14' 1" 6 wt. 6 piece rod looks fine. Unfortunately I couldn’t find it in your web site.
Is it a standard rod, which you usually have for sale, or a rod only produced following a special order?
I assume that is well suited to swing flies in warm water conditions. In other words, I am not interested in a rod specialized in casting Skagit lines/heavy tips, for winter fishing.
How much does it cost?
Which medium/long belly traditional spey lines ( floating and multip) do you recommend to use with this rod?
Questions, questions. Thanks in advance for your reply.

This rod is part of my regular line up. The top five pieces are my 1195-5, the rod is very linear in power. This rod really likes the CnD 5/6 mid belly line. I fish it with one of my Scandi style ACR Steelhead lines.

Interesting.
What about the bottom section?
What do you exactly mean by “very linear in power”?
Could not find its price on your web site.:???:
At this juncture, it seems that after all I will have, once again, some business to do in San Francisco at the very end of August/beginning of September 2010. Afterwards I could well take a few weeks of holidays and fish the Rogue and other rivers. In that case, as the rod is part of your regular line up, I would be interested in trying it at your premises
(upper Rogue I believe), together with medium/long belly traditional spey lines (both floating and multip).
What do you think?
