After all of this rain some fish may have moved in. I went out last wednesday and saw acouple of fish but I didn't catch any. The water was still pretty low and clear. (thats the excuse I'm sticking with)
Did you have any luck last weekend? Is it worth sticking around town or should I make the drive east?
Thanks
Jason

I thought it was subject to low flow closures. Haven't called the DFG number yet but did they open it last week? Just curious.
Thanks!

The number is 831-649-2886. Santa Cruz county is open, Monterey county is closed.
Poor Jaybinder!! I bet you got your PM inbox full with messages from the "local crowd, SLR for the local people only, I don't want to share "my super secret stream" local crowd" advising you not to post any reports on the SLR. Hushshhshsh.

Pez,
That's the lamest thing I've read in a long time. I have just now decided to go fish the SLR and will absolutely post any good fortune and if thats an issue, you'll know how to find me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big J I think you misunderstood my post. I was just been sarcastic, making fun from some people who don't want or don't like others to post on certain streams. I understand their point too, however, a fisning forum is a place to share your fishing experiences. Isn't it?. Have fun. I might be down south too.
Pez, I got your sarcasm, but I think it may have been poorly aimed. That's just my take on it... it's only worth the time it takes to read the post. For what it is worth, if I have a special river, I will try to show it to someone rather than tell them about it. If someone sees what a special place it is, they tend to take a "stewards" role toward it. If you just post it up... you do tend to invite the crowds.
Will that make a difference if the river is the Trinity, Klamath, or Sacramento? No... I think those secrets have been blown (sarcasm... you've got to love it!) But if you've got one of the lesser known rivers with smaller runs you probably should be a little more cagey about blasting it out over the internet.
If you think I'm just blowing hot air, look at what happened with the Trinity two years ago... They had an epic run, but the word got out on the internet. You had folks driving in from Idaho and Montana to cash in on the run. That never would have happened 10 years ago without the help of the www. The Trinity is still getting pounded because of it... but I think it's getting better. Crowds are moving to the next "hot river" It's a "Henry's Fork" effect. Some rivers can take that pressure... some can't.
I've got some questions on some rivers in California... but I'm not just broadcasting wide questions about it. I'm finding people that may know, and asking quiet questions about them. I'm driving up and taking a chance and looking at them or finding shops/guides in the area that can or will give a report. Steelhead and troutstreams are special... they should be treated accordingly.
Now that the treatise on my philosophy is done... I'll get back to the vice. I've got some herniators to crank out.

I spent many summers in Santa Cruz because we had relatives there.
We swam/snorkeled in the lower San Lorenzo River right near the ocean as kids. Lots of perch in there on the rocky side.
My avatar photo is right on the beach next to the pier.
I fished the San Lorenzo River once for Silver Salmon on Thanks Giving? in 1975.
This might have been before any dams were on the river?
Before sun-up there were maybe 200 people in that corner just up from the mouth and railroad bridge. Only a few dozen fish were caught and I was a 100 yards from any action. You could hear the old Hardy ratchet reels screaming in the dark before sunrise.
Having mostly fished more up river Steelhead in those days we used faster sinking shooting heads.
Fly fishing the lakey tide water was way different than the Klamath or Trinity Rivers.
One of the locals was using a 7 weigh fiberglass fly rod with a WF7 Intermediate line and a small black Woolly Worm (Woolly Bugger was not born yet).
I had a 9' #9 fiberglass Fenwick rod with a ST10S type II that was on the bottom in a few seconds after I cast. Not good.....
This was my first introduction to tide water fly fishing which was a good thing for me to see.

I sent Jaybinder a pm about the SLR (I live about 300 yds from it) and he asked a follow up question that I answered as well. Subsequesnt to that I received pm questions from 3 other members and answered them to the best of my ability.
There's no need (IMO) to broadcast news about a little stream like this, a 45 minute drive from the metropolis. Having said that, I think a MEMBER of the board who's willing to trade messages is probably a guy who will take care of the river and the fish and might even have information I might need someday.
The river is so short that you really can fish almost all of it in a day or 2 if you keep on the move, so "secret spots" don't really exist in my mind. Every hole is named and has been for 50 years or more.
Weekends, especially if the river is green and on the fall, are very crowded with fishers from the "outside" and locals just have to accept that. Wednesdays are a little better, but you still need to be a rock hopping bushwhacker to fish it right. It is not an easy stream, and most fish MANY days before hooking up. Many fishermen fish it for several seasons before bringing a fish to hand.
...just trying to clear the air...thanks, -Mike

Being fairly new to the sport I am still learning the ethics that go along with it. In the future I will be more subtle with my questions. It was not my intent to broadcast anyones secret spots. If I stepped on any toes please accept my appology and lets chalk it up to "new guy syndrome".
I sometimes forget how hard it can be to recognize sarcasm on the internet. No harm no foul.
As the OP I say lets let this thread die and move on.
By the way have you seen that guys pic from.........;-)

Nobody has done anything wrong in this thread, Jaybinder....if Pez was just fooling, he's ok. It's hard to "get" sarcasm in print, and your question was fine. -Mike
