You don't have to be cold and not catching fish on your fly rod.

Many fly fishers will be heading in Nov/Dec/Jan to Lake Mateos and Lake El Salto in Mexico for some great warm water action on Large Mouth Bass.

These trips are very popular, very close for us on the west coast and very affordable too.

I think there's enough pic's on Keith's Blog so that's enough with the photos..

As an old Delta Rat it's hard for me to say that the Bass at Lake Mateos put our Delta Bass to shame!! One three pound Mateos Bass could tow around any 4 of our Delta Bass with one fin!!

I went down there on a trip hosted by Keith Kaneko with an old friend Alan Wilhelmy as my fishin' partner. To say the trip was an outstanding success is to short change it! We hit it perfect! The weather was beautiful as was the scenery. The fishin' couldn't have been better and the catchin' was great!!

With most Lodges, unless they specialize in fly fishing, there is a disconnect with the Guides and boat handling with respect to the way to operate with fly fishers. I have to say the the Guides at Mateos were among the best I've seen as far as working with fly fishers in regard to speed control and maintaining boat position for getting off the best shots into nooks and crannies and they know their water.

With the exception of one slow morning Alan and I were kept pretty busy for the majority of our fishing time. Other than two fish I caught with a full intermediate line, we fished top water the whole time we were there. Needless to say we missed a lot of fish as we never felt them. After many years of chasin' Bass it is my firm opinion that they have myopic vision!! They completely miss about 1/3rd of the time. While my biggest fish was 6lbs or so and Alan's was about the same, we caught dozens in the 3-5 lb range. I may have to go to El Salto to beat my personal best of an 8.5 caught in Trapper Slough in 1966! (before the Hyacinth ruined the place) Dang! where do they hide those 10-12lb fish anyway??

The lodge serves up some great meals, their boats are well laid-out for fly casting and they are one of the few Lodges that have stripping buckets. They're pretty simple in that they are 30 Gal. garbage cans but more than adequate. I highly recommend a trip down there!

The only regret I have is that I spent a week and a half tyin' up a bunch of Bass bugs I hardly used because I couldn't quit fishin' some Umpqua white foam poppers one of the other guys gave me!!
