I'm new to spey casting and was surfing the tube for something to learned from and came across this vid on single hand spey technique....He makes it look so easy and smooth. I don't know if i should start with a double hander or just use my single hand rod to learn how to do spey casting.

I don't know which would be better since I still consider myself a novice. However, I do know that since picking up a spey rod I use these techniques very often when using my single hander and it is way more effective than a roll cast.

While I was fishing in the mangrove lagoons of the Mexican Yucatan my fishing partner Keith Kaneko was using single-hand Spey casting techniques to cast in our confined situation.

I mentioned it to him and he said it is just a natural thing to do once you have learned these casts with a two-handed rod.

Pretty cool stuff.......

I absolutely use spey casting techniques with a single hander. Can't cast as far or use as heavy or hairy a bug as you could with a long rod and the right rope - er, line - but it's something you should learn for sure!

Jeff Putnam has a single handed spey casting class that specifically addresses how to apply double handed rod techniques to single handed rods. If you can't roll cast 40', Jeff's class will really help you with presenting a fly when close to cover. A great class that I would STRONGLY recommend: http://jpflyfishing.com/groupclasses/castingclasses/casting40feet.htm.
