It happens somedays.......... LDR, LDR, SDR, missed a big chromer rising to my flies not once, but twice, set the hook on another grab after that and feel the fly just pull through the fishes mouth....... put my head down at sunset and walked out.....
Met a nice guy in the parking lot though.

That's about how my last outing went. Worst part was I saw another fisherman just up river catching fish! Sometimes it's just not your day.

J,
I'll take that kind of grab anyday... over nothing. That kind of action gets my heart pumping... and my $%^ hard... just like colfaxtrout's profile pic :)

Hmmm, size 14 2457 ain't big enuff (maybe it's a 16, damn my memory)? It's almost too much real estate to tie on already......=p I kept looking at it and it seemed fine, maybe I should try the 2488 as it's a similar hook but straight eye.... Never had any issues before last night but my pattern seems to be working well.

Only you would consider a # 14/16 'too much real estate' ! LOLOLOLOLOL
Do this -
Take a size 10 or 12 scud hook (quit laughing ....) , tye .... say , a Birdnest .... but make the Birdnest ONLY a 14 or 16 - I learned this trick from Pat Sandlin years ago . While it looks really silly to US , the Steelhead don't give a squirt about the hook .... and if you want to actually LAND one of those 8-12 Pounders in a reasonable amount of time , you will need a bigger hook than a 14 .
This works well for smallish Mayflies , also . Handy in the Spring when the Steelies are used to feeding on BWO's . Give it an honest try ....

Davids description is known as a "low water tie". Its a good way to do it. Targeting steelhead with a #14 or #16 is just...well....WOW!
Back in the "hay days" of steelhead on the rogue, I had a day when I went 0 for 11. I left because I felt so beat, not cause the bite shut off. If I remember right, I packed sand after losing #10 and 11 on successive casts. Its a crazy game!
