Anyone here tie on an HMH Spartan. Like it? Not like?

I've never tied on an HMH Spartan but my regular vise is the HMH Standard, which is no more than just a larger version of the HMH Spartan. I'm very happy with it. The quality is absolutely top notch, it holds hooks solidly, and I fully expect it to outlast me for sure. Also, the jaws can be switched out by just twisting them in and out and many believe the HMH midge jaws provide the best hook access to small hooks (18 and smaller) bar none. (The HMH Spartan and HMH Standard share the same sets of jaws by the way.)

There's a review of HMH Spartan (as well as the HMH Standard and many other vises) on www.flyfisherman.com (http://www.flyfisherman.com).

You can also see a lot of comments posted on www.flytyingforum.com (http://www.flytyingforum.com) in the "What vise do you own?" thread.

Finally, check out this really cool video of an HMH Spartan being used to tie true rotary-style (at the end, the tyer also pretzels a hook to demonstrate its hook-holding ability) :

You can tell I like HMH vises but must also acknowledge that vise preferences are a very personal thing, like choices in fly rods, women, guns, and dogs.

I have a Ron Abby Signature vise (love it) that I loaned to friend for one week and due to circumstances beyong his control it appeared I would not get it back for quite a long time, if ever. I also have a Danvise that I use as a travel vise, it's a very good vise; but due to my home tying set up, it can't cut it (at home). I lucked into a great deal on the Spartan, it will arrive by Wednesday.

Last night I found out I could get my DK back next weekend, so now I'll have three vises. If I like the Spartan (and I'm sure I will), I'll probably give the Danvise away.

Do you by chance have the extension arm for the Danvise?

I use a Danvise and love it. No complaints except for the tight tail space.

No, I do not have the extension arm. I think the Danvise is clearly the best vise for under $100 and better than a lot of vises the cost more than $100.

I have a Danvise with the extension arm, you can pick the extension up for around 18 bucks. The extension is worth every penney, making an already very good vise even better to work with.

Only demerit is that the material clamp spring loses some utility. Still, I want one!
