I just got back from the Clearwater River area of Idaho. The fishing was outstanding and we tossed hoppers into waiting mouths all day long. But there was a moth on the water that got way more attention than our hoppers. It was off-white with a pale brown ring around the edge of the two sets of wings (front and rear). It had an off-white body. They were bop down to the water surface like a mayfly laying eggs and then pop up again. It would repeat this over and over. The fish would come clear out of the water and nab them from mid-air! I didn't have anything that was a really good match for it but my buddy used a white foam hopper that gave up the ghost after about 30 fish. But it was the only one he had.
Any idea what this moth is? What's its life cycle like?

Appreciate the help. I wish I had a decent picture of it, but I don't.

Cheers,
Mike

Without a photo or more complete description, my guess is what you saw was an aquatic moth. They're very similar in appearance to Caddis. They're in the same order (Lepidotera), too. Color is close to what you describe.... :|

Maybe someone with better "bug" skills than I will know.

My guess would be a spruce moth, but kinda late for those.
