We have tons of local year round fly fishing opportunities here in the Valley near Sacramento.
We have bass & panfish galore in ponds, creeks, reservoirs and the Delta.
We have the Lower American River that has Steelhead almost year round now plus Stripers action all summer and American Shad in the Spring.
If you are new to the sport and fish more locally you will develop skills that you can take with you anywhere.
Sadly many of us just don't get the time to go as much as others do so we are not getting all that experience and practice that would help us be better fly fishers.
Right now in the morning or evening you could get down the the river and have a good chance to hook and land a nice Half-pounder Steelhead.
When I was younger I think half my fly fishing was in the Lower American River.
