That would be an exceptional catch during the late fall or winter.... I know it's possible to catch large Steelhead in "the system" but at this time of year....  :-k Are you sure it wasn't a Salmon

At any rate, it must've been fun to catch.... 8-)

Not to be a cynic, but there seems to be a huge steelhead caught each year in the valley that goes unsubstantiated. On the other hand, if you got pics, I'll be the first in line to see them. Let's hope this is real.

I've got the story right here. And it's a classic.

Enjoy

:lol::eek:

In 1967, Alvin Samples, an overall-clad, stock-car racing liquor store operator, claimed to have caught a world record 22-pound, 9-ounce largemouth bass in Cumming, Georgia’s Lake Lanier, shattering the 35 year-old mark by five ounces.

Jim Morrison, the Georgia Game and Fish Department Chief of Information, drove to Cumming to investigate. He easily found his man. Not surprising – how much bigger than Samples could Cumming have been? Morrison interviewed Alvin on his front porch, which he dubbed “Squalor Holler.” Fortunately, the exchange was recorded.

Samples said he caught the fish on a submerged island. “I dropped my anchor rock there on the island and pitched my little Zebbyco 33 out and had some heavy equipment there in the boat. I put a big lizard on it and got ready for big bass. I got one hooked over there and saw my line a stretchin’ and a straightenin’ and I reached down and caught him. When I jerked him I thought I was hung up because it didn’t go no where. After he come up and stood on that tail and shook that head three or four times, he just turned over on his side and I just drug him right in.”

Samples said he ate the record fish but swore he’d weighed it several places first. But when pressed, Samples couldn’t remember where. “I don’t know. I was drunk. We weighed him somewhere. I showed him all over the county. At least I think I did. There’s plenty of people who seed the fish. I thought we weighed him down at Joe Hansard’s but Grace said Harold said we didn’t weigh him down there so I guess we didn’t weigh him down there.”

“I drove him all around the lake looking for who weighed it,” Morrison stated. “The hell of it is we found someone who said he’d seen the fish.”

Samples talked so convincingly Morrison started to believe him. Samples even produced a rotted, stinking fish head so large it astounded the official. He photographed Samples wearing the fish head as a hat.

Morrison drove the head to Atlanta and woke up a fisheries biologist who examined it by flashlight. He stated: “This is the finest bass that’s ever lived.”

Now convinced, Morrison contacted WSB, an Atlanta radio station. The story broke almost immediately, prompting a saltwater biologist to come examine the head. He stated: “Jim, that ain’t no bass. It’s a red grouper.”

Hoax indeed. But where would Samples find a saltwater fish head so far from the ocean? Some say he and his brother lifted it from someone’s car and ate all but the head. Others say his son drug it home from the town dump – remaining intact only because it stunk so bad the dogs wouldn’t touch it.

I know there was a photo of Junior with his fish head, I remember seeing it somewhere, I think it was when he died, but for the life of me I can't find it on the net. But it had me rolling around laughing.

We have really big Rainbow trout in Lake Natomas. Maybe a giant one got over the dam?

Would be interesting to try and find out what is the largest Steelhead weighed in at the Nimbus Hatchery on the Lower American River.

Lil Striper, the doubters have to be expected and for good reason, a steelhead that large would be rare indeed this time of year. Most of us probably think large steelhead in January this far up the system and even then thats a pig, but anything is possible, if you have pics that would be great. With due respect, not sure where the bass story fits in here, whether it proves to be true or not can't see this posted as or meant to be a hoax.

That's a nice buck but a couple of things come to mind...

#1) although that would be a chromer by 'fishsniffer-standards...'

It's obviously been out of the salt for at least a month (note black on operculum) which would be a bit strange for any local valley or coastal strain of steelhead (in early September)

#2) 22#? is that scale working right?

Congrats on the fish regardless

huntindog

that is a 12 lb fish..and chrome? Really? If there were a 22 lb steely landed the guide would have taken 50 pics of it and good measurments. Guides do this all the time, grossly overestimate the size of a fish. Clients don't know any better and they start blabbing about huge fish...it is marketing. I used to work on the docks for DFG measuring/weighing salmon. I would weigh a couple hundred fish a day. I got to where I could get within an oz and not even throw the fish on the scale. It is amazing how many "50 lb kings" i saw hit the dock that turned into 25 lb kings. Last year i helped a guide and his client land a 8 lb steely on the Trinity...guide told the client over and over again it was a 15 lber...just had to laugh. This fish is not 22 lbs and i question where it came from (isn't that rain gear the person is wearing) all that cold drizzly rain we have had in the sac valley lately. ....got any fuzzy pics of big foot to go with it?

Sorry but that fish is not 22lbs.Also the rain gear makes me think that it wasn't caught in the valley. It is a nice hatchery buck though.

Nice steelhead!!! Its a touchy subject when giving a weight and size to a steelhead thats almost unbelievable. Its good practice to just post the photo of a "nice fish" and let the viewers make up their own mind and I gaurantee theyll be impressed. A prelude of grandure is a settup for disapointment.

I dont quite understand the picture. It almost looks like a photo of a photo. Im not sure why the border is scribbled.

I'm sure that fish in the photo was at some time " in our system". But what time of year? Is that rain gear or a heavy jacket being worn in the photo? Looks alittle out of place for this time of year.
Talk about some some controversy, why blur out the rest of the photo?
I would be proud to post a real photo on my original post to back it up. This would have put it to rest on the get go.

If I knew this much controversy was gonna get generated, I would have put a post about the 8lb bluegill I caught on my snoopy fishing pole when I was
a seasoned fishermen at the age of 6. :puke:

According to my wife, " your all a bunch of lieing fishermen"

Now that I'm done poking some fun.#-o
Hope its true!
Nice Fish! Whoever caught it, Whenever it was caught, Wherever it was caught.

Bigfoot got wiped out in the background.... Looks like a nice fish to me. Little Striper, define "our system" a little bit.... if you mean somewhere in Cali ok, but if you mean one of our Local Rivers then it's hard to believe.... and who would be tossing a big egg pattern (looks like one anyway) right now with no spawning salmon in the system....... (but I could be wrong on this too).

Darian, the all-tackle world record bluegill was 4 lbs 12 oz. and was caught in 1950. An 8 lb bluegill would be like catching a 40 lb largemouth bass.

I missed the Picture. Can you post another. Here's an 18 lber. on the American back in 2002, you can see the boga in the water. For all those that are about to rant about using a boga and how it damages fish, I didn't know any better back in 2002 now after reading about them I don't weigh big fish any more. I believe there are big fish in these local systems, it seems some years are better than others and hopefully this year will be one of them.

Hey, what happened here? I thought we were arguing about big fish. :-)

Frank Pipgras
09-11-2009, 10:11 AM
The biggest steelhead I have heard of in the last few years in California was three years ago on the Trinity. A casual acquaintance of mine fishing with a guide I know well hooked and landed a wild buck on a fly that measured 37 and 1/4 inches and was estimated at 16+ pounds. I have heard that the biggest fish in the Klamath system make a right turn and go up the Trinity.

Mike R
09-11-2009, 10:32 AM
That's a big fish for the T...but larger fish are caught every year in California. Think Smith, Eel, etc. 20lbers are not that rare up there. There are also some pigs that head up a few of the less advertised rivers.

What made the fish in this thread extraordinary is that is was [supposedly] from the Valley.

See ya,
Mike
