Headed up for 5 days to stay at a resort in sisters. I have never fished either of the waters. I know that the N Umpqua is all Skating flies on top. Thats about it.

The Met is tough water, but not impossible. If you're looking for bull trout throw big white streamers. Small BWO 18-22's and caddis 16-20.

check out the link for fish counts at Winchester on the NU - runs are pretty low on the NU this year.

But who said the NU is just skating on top? This is a great river for skating but you certainly are not limited to this method. The only restrictions up to October is no added weight on fly or leader but you can use sink tip lines and plastic tube flies that are 5" long if you wish. Although I do skate flies here I would say the majority of my fishing is sub-surface

Got back from the NU about two weeks ago. Stopped at Susan Creek campground just after they got the fire under control and had two takes in less than an hour. All the reports I got from the locals said the fishing had been fantastic. I'll be up there next week after fishing the Deschutes below Max Canyon.

And ooops...both my takes were on #4 Green Butted Skunks. Be sure to read the regs for the fly fishing only section regarding prohibition of any type of added weight on fly or leader. Sinking (non lead core) line is OK.

Darrin:

I was lucky enough to get up to the Umpqua (http://www.shastatrout.com/umpqua-river-august-23-24-25th/) last week and it was good. The counts are down because I've heard that nearly 2/3 of the hatchery fish died prior to being released as smolts. Good news is the remaining numbers are mostly wild fish.

Skating can be awesome, both to get a grab and to search for takers and then follow up with subsurface patterns. I like to skate early and late when the sun is off the water and fish sink tips and large flies midday if I'm in the mood.

Most the fish we found were in the Camp Water near the mouth of Steamboat Creek. We counted a dozen fish that came out of the Station in two days. Surveyor, Bridge, and Kitchen also produced multiple fish.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip. I can't wait to hear your report. Wishing you tight lines and a singing reel!
