I think most will agree that on average October is a wonderful month for fly fishing on most trout streams in Nor Cal that have an water in them.

I would target most medium an large streams in Nor Cal for an October outting.

Days are shorter in October and weather is not too hot and not too cold so fly fishing can be good all day long.

Try to get something on the calendar for this time of year so you can get an idea what California has to offer at one of it's best timings.

October is usually a time for smallers "hatch matcher" flies on light tippets and bigger streamers too.

I've never put much effort into fishing streamers. I love trout fishing streams and rivers, and have spent most of my time learning how to effectively dead-drift nymphs and egg imitations. Sometimes I find a big deep hole on one of our rivers (the Truckee, for example) and think there's probably some big predatory brown trout lurking in the shadows waiting for something worthwhile to ambush. What patterns would you suggest, and when and how would you fish them? I mainly fish the Truckee.

TIA!,
