Been spending all my free time doing family things (zoo, fruit picking, etc.) so hadn't had a chance to go fishing since my last report. So I was really excited to get out for a few hours at daybreak on Sunday to flyfish the California Delta in my inflatable kayak. Fished exclusively with topwater deer hair divers and mostly tossed up against the bank. Got quite a few topwater hits but I think I was a little trigger-happy and missed quite a few. Did get some, though, and here are a couple of the better ones. This one taped at just over 17" and felt heavy and strong for her length, putting a very nice bend in my 7 wt. rod. She sipped the bug off the surface like she was a trout, confirming you can't always tell the size of a fish by the take:

This next one taped at 15" and was a lot of fun to catch. As soon as she whacked the bug and hooked up, she made a bee-line from left to right, heading directly for a big submerged bush about 10' away. Thank goodness I noticed just in time and turned her. Fun stuff!

I seemed to have better success fishing very slowly, tossing the diver out there, letting it sit for a bit, making it dive, then letting it sit for a little while longer. Seemed like the bass were mulling it over and eventually hitting it while the bug was paused. Hey, whatever they want, right? :D

It is very hot out there right now, but if you can get on the water before 6:00 a.m., I have found you can have a few hours of very pleasant fishing. :)

Glad your fishing Mike, I have to stop going to the mountains and start hitting the delta for bass myself. I miss the tug of a god fat bass, heck even a the tug of a skinny bass.
