Hey all
I haven't done any fishing for Steelhead, acidentally got one fishing for Shad years ago. I will be visiting a friend in Shady Cove, OR on the Rouge River next week. He has access to a boat and fishes 4-8 miles downstream with gear. I would like to try my hand at fly fishing for them, but don't have a clue as to flies(glo bugs? nymphs? streamers?) or technique(swinging? Indicators?). I have a 9' 6wt, 9'6" 7wt, 9' 8wt and various lines(floating to t8,11) for them. He stated flow was at 2700 and thought it would be decreasing some. Any help would be greatly appreciated, including "get a guide", but would like to fish with my friend since I will only be there 3 days. Thought I would start here and continue on with Google, etc.
Thanks
Steve

Swing for them, Steelhead deserve better than an indicator!

Our friend up there, Al Perryman, gets up real early in the morning and swings traditional flies for them all summer.

Real early AM is best in the summer for winging flies.

I would go with the 7wt and swing streamers. I also suggest that you and your friend go into "The Fishin Hole" in "downtown" Shady Cove (541-878-4000 if you want to call ahead) before you start fishing. They not only can set you up with all the flies you need, they will be more than glad to show you how to get to nearby runs such as Rogue Elk and Tu Val. They can also sell you a non-resident fishing licenses and hook you up with a guide. If you want to do some great trout fishing, ask the folks there about "The Holy Water" just north Shady Cove. Enjoy your trip.......Anne
