Fly fished the Lower Tuolumne river for a change this afternoon out of the inflatable kayak. I know there's some good bass at this location, including smallies, but decided to just fish the 2 wt. rod today based on a prior experience of catching mostly small bass and panfish.

It was truly an absolutely gorgeous day with very little breeze. Air temperatures were just about perfect in the late afternoon and it was really pleasant and relaxing to be out there in the kayak. Here's a view of the water:

This lower section basically fishes like a warm water lake in most parts with no discernible current. Anyway, I started tossing a variety of subsurface flies and started getting into these, as well as the occasional little bass:

This redear was about as big as I got 'em today -- that's a size 6 Jurassic Sculpin in his mouth. I also hauled in a mess of bluegill. All told, I must have caught at least a couple or three dozen . . . I lost count after a while.

Later on, I started tossing a little topwater deer hair popper (Tap's Bug) and continued catching panfish, as well as some small bass like this one (sorry for the bad pic!):

All told, I got about a dozen of these little bass. It doesn't take much fish, though, to have fun with a 2 wt. rod and I really got a kick out of it. These little rods are fun toys! In any case, it was a very relaxing trip with enough action to keep me busy. Will have to do it again sometime. :D

Andy Guibord has a TFO 7'6" #3-2 pc ($99) that we tried lots of different lines on and settled with a WF5F for small bass bugs.

It is a great rod for smaller bugs and small stream bass bugging.
