Windy. It was windy. I got to Rio Vista at 4:30 friday and found flags flying stiff as boards. I decided to roll up to Snodgrass Slough, find a shelterd cut and pull bugs across cheese. I poked some half pound smallies till dark, loaded the boat and then headed for the ramp at B&W. BTW- If you like the cozy sound of diesel trucks and the warmth of headlights in your bed, try camping at the ramp parking lot the night befor a tourneyment. All night they rolled in.
I met Mike at 5:30 at the dock and we were punched by a 15 knot blow right out of the gate. We hooked and sent home a hand full of black bass each, in and around Sycamore Slough. Did I mention it was windy? While running back to The Moke my bug decided to fly away and take with it the shooting head and all my string. When it reached the reel it pulled over the stripping bucket, as it crashed to the deck I glanced back just in time to watch my Cross Current and Galvan join the fly on the bottom of the South Mokelumne.
After dropping Mike off, I loaded up and drove into Rio Vista to meet my new friend Rick the fabricator. I cut and bent, he welded. Two hour's and 35 bucks later I was on my way back to the ramp with my grapling hook. I re-launched the boat and headed back to find the needle in the Mok. Reaching the "I think this looks about right" spot I began tossing my bat hook 30 or so feet, dragging with it 40 pounds of weeds and mud back to the boat. At this pace I should be able to cover the 100 x 50 yard crash site by thursday. One hour later, hands bleeding, coverd in mud and Brazilian water weed I began to lose hope. I don't know why, but I asked my dad for help. He passed 7 years ago but sometimes I talk to him. My dad was a hard hat diver in the army and a skipper on the G.G ferrys. We used to dive salvage for the bridge district and inspect the boats. We found a lot of gear. On my very next toss.............Thank's pop's, happy father's day.
