If you arent familiar with the Deschutes River in Oregon, late May into early June is Stonefly and Salmonfly mania. The big bugs crawl all over the alders and bushes providing some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. The Deschutes boast a huge population of native "redside" trout that fight harder than any trout I have caught.

This year was no exception. Big trout all on top. Huge boils and takes that you simply imagine or read about in magazines. We fished three days and didn't use a nymph the entire time. This year the weather was pretty unpredictable with thunderstorms and a wind storm with sustained winds of 80 MPH. This really did a number on the bugs, leaving not many around to do their egg laying and take flight in the afternoon heat but needless to say the trout were still looking up. If this is something you have thought about doing, I strongly suggest a trip to the great Northwest. No need for a guide trip or a boat. Simply find some bushes, tie on your favorite Stonefly pattern and hold on tight!

2X all day long! When they want the bug, they will eat it.

Sacramento bunch George Doykos, Dick Hauch, John Yen and Ron Hayashi just returned from a 3 day / 2 nite float trip with Deschutes Angler Fly Shop out of Maupin, OR.

They hit the salmon fly hatch perfect and did extremely well too.

Meals and guides were excellent too.

I always hear that early June is the timing for that trip?

The Deschutes River in Oregon is one of the West's best trout and steelhead rivers.

Thanks for the great report "Easy"

PS: We have a nice steelhead float trip scheduled with Deschutes Angler in late august hosted by Jason Hartwick.
