Went fishing this morning with a long-time friend and new fly fisherman Joe B.
Joe caught a few shad last season, but needed to work on his casting if he was going to pursue stripers. We went to the American at first light and threw small "Charlies Air Heads" for the first hour. Only got one big swirl with no landed fish on top water. Next hour, we fished 250 grn and T-14 with the Targus "Foxy Minnow." Joe's casting improved and we landed 5 nice schoolies.
Moved up river to look for Shad and we found one of my favorite spots with no one else fishing in it. We fished for two hours and landed 16 with at least 8 other good bumps and several long line releases. The highlight of the trip, other than turning a newbie on to the "Striper Addiction," was a 20 to 25 LB striper that chased our incoming shad 3 different times all the way to the boat. I tried to get her to take the biggest white and silver fly I had with me, but she would not cooperate. Very cool to watch.

The American River is awesome in the spring and early summer.
