I had a nice phone conversation with Bob Grace @ the Ted Fay Fly Shop in Dunsmuir yesterday. Bob says the river is still a little high and cold but should be fishing good by late May with June again being a wild month up[ there.

He did say that people were doing well on the Mccloud River.

I think the Pit River should be good bet right now too.

Remember that "June" is a very big month for the mid-elevation trout fishing in larger streams and lakes for big trout in California.

If you need any help planning a successful trip to any of our top trout fisheries let me know.

Bill:
Flows on the Upper Sac are a bit high but still below the norm while the current storm has flows coming up again. Water temps on the other hand are in the mid fifties. McCloud flows are lower and it is more wadable but water temps are still in the mid forties. The Pit has been fishing well, particularly for those in the know, flows are ideal for early season, but opening weekend was a bit busy and some folks had trouble finding fresh water. We still have a few 'bows on the spawn on all three freestones but the bigger issue is that bug activity hasn't really taken off yet. The warm spell we had got things moving, we even saw a few confused grasshoppers and Tricos! Provided this storm is relatively mild as predicted I would guess the next warm front that moves in late next week will pick up the bite and as flows on the Upper Sac drop the fishing could get very interesting later in the month. BTW the Fall & Hat Creek are in great shape and fishing as well this early as they have in some time. I will be updating the ShastaTrout Fishing Report (http://www.shastatrout.com/fishing-reports/) early next week. Feel free to ring anytime for current conditions.
