The public is invited to comment on plans to modify fish ladder facilities at Nimbus Hatchery on the American River at two meetings next week.

The existing fish weir, which crosses the river to divert salmon into the fish ladder, was first built in 1955. It is now in poor condition and requires excessive maintenance. It also is vulnerable to flooding conditions.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and California Department of Fish and Game propose to either rebuild the weir, or build a new weir that extends the fish ladder into the stilling basin at the base of Nimbus Dam.

Fish would hold there until they ascend the ladder, which may require new fishing regulations.

The two meetings are on April 30, either 1 to 3 p.m. or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., both at the California State University, Sacramento, Aquatic Center, 1901 Hazel Ave., Rancho Cordova.

The public may attend anytime during each meeting.
