Kienes B.B. buddy/good Friend/Bass lunatic Hairstacker Mike came up to Sacramento for a visit ......

Mike's visit is something that I always enjoy (I enjoy his visits enough that I want to hide his Car keys ....) - hopefully we can get some assorted fishes ! Only problem ?? It's nasty outside . Most warmwater critters are sensitive to cold fronts coming thru ..... what to do ??? Hmmmmmm .....?

Hit POND X !! The Mother of all small ponds !!!! How can we fail ??!??

The good news is .... we didn't fail .

While Pond X fell short of being EPIC , it was close enough to be ALMOST epic - We had a conservative body count of 50+ (probably closer to 65 or 70 .... I don't count that closely anymore ...)) between the two of us , mostly fair 'Gills and Shellcrackers , some in the 10-inch range ..... and several LMB , none over 2 lbs. . Kind of hard to believe that the water up the hill is still a bit chilly , but it is . Pond X level is down 4-feet from my last (2007) visit , and it is weeded in pretty hard . Access only 2 or 3 spots , the rest is overgrown . Wading impossible , unless you want to spend eternity as a fossill (yup , our old friend , the MUCK bottom ....) . The other pond in the area is totally overgrown , so we didn't fish it .

The hot fly was a scud-hook Olive beaded Birdnest , size #10 . We also used tiny poppers , a #8 Carey Special , and Mike's Hare's ear . A new Rust Woolhead Leech got me the Bass of the day .

Learned several things -

Killer Ponds w/ huge fish populations are almost weather-proof .

Mike will be adding the Birdnest to his top-10 flies soon .

Don't run thru fields pock-marked w/ varmit dens .

Wading on sucking-muck bottoms is best left to Herons (I knew that one already) .

The walk out sucks MUCH harder than the walk in (I knew that one , also) .

Mike needs to visit more often .

All said , a pretty pleasant day !! I'll post photos tonight ....

Sounds like a fun day, definitely a lot more fun than being at work! I wouldn't talk to much about hiding Hairstackers keys to much as we all might start getting the wrong idea about you two http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-forum/rotfl.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org).

Nope .... no 'Brokeback rollcasting' going on !

Just trying to convey that Hairstacker is the ideal fishing partner - good fisherman , great tyer , and is happy just to be out , nevermind the catching/lack of catching (unlike me) .

One more note - I used my Fenwick 7 1/2 foot 4 wt. and 4x tippet - the Sunnies were fun , but the Bass were a pain , especially in the weeds (got buried a few times ......) .

I forgot just how much fun getting into #'s of Panfish is !

Is that one of the old glass rods? I love using my Fenwick glass rods every now & then.

Nope - the el-cheapo Fenwick Eagle GC .

I'm a huge fan of all things Fenwick , and especially this kind of rod . A short 4 shouldn't set you back big $$$$ - I've thrown a 60+foot cast on that thing , and have found that it works best under 35 feet .

A great small creek/pond stick !!

I WISH I had some Glass Fenwicks in my collection ........ then , I'd have to get more reels/lines/etc. , and I can't justify that to management (Candida) .

Actually .... if I had any more gear , I'd have to hire a rodbearer ?

We definitely need to keep management happy! It's to the point that I have so much stuff that if I need something (actually want something) I just have it shipped to my office & then slip it in amongst all my other gear.

Ahhh , yes .

The battle between NEED and WANT - I know it well .

Fortune smiled on me when I met my Wife - she tolerates the fishing thing pretty well . I do try to balance the want/need thing fairly , though .... especially when it comes to under-retail flylines and all tying stuff .

Hard to weigh out reason when you lust after gear .........

Hey David, thanks again for a great day!! That pond was very sweet. Given the weather, I don't think we could have done better anywhere else. As it was, the action was for the most part pretty much non-stop. :D

I only caught one bass (on the Jurassic Sculpin I tied for the last fly swap no less) but, then again, I spent almost the whole time targeting those hand-sized and better panfish, which were a hoot on a light rod.

You're not kidding about the mud. I tried to wet-wade in what looked to be about 6" of water only to sink in mud up to my hips. I can definitely relate to the fossil thing, as I actually thought of that while I struggled mightily to get myself out of it.

Also, thanks again for the killer breakfast and awesome box of flies! (David gave me one of the big Plano boxes filled with go-to bass flies of all types that he had tied -- a very cute spun/stacked deer hair popper, a spun/stacked deer hair diver, woolheads including a very sweet sculpin pattern, a 6 wt. craw, a Deceiver, a Puglisi-style bluegill pattern, a foam Gurgler, a sleave-bodied baitfish, and others. . . man, it was like Christmas again! David once again showed me just how versatile he is at the vise by very skillfully utilizing so many different types of materials. If that wasn't enough, David didn't let me leave without also taking a couple of bass hackle necks and various leech yarns, which he claimed were supposedly "extra materials" he didn't need (as if there is such a thing).

Anyway, the fishing and company alone made it a fantastic day! I'm going to have to figure out how to visit again once the season really gets underway. :D

Tony, don't get any funny ideas! [-(

I'm just relieved to hear that there's no Broke Back Fly Fishing going on! http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sport041.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org)
