Well, with spring right around the corner, there are usually a few threads on this board right about now about chasing after smallmouth bass, as evidenced by this thread from a couple years ago: :D

What say you, anyone else with smallies on the mind? I was thinking I might have to hit the Tuolumne this year -- never checked it out before but have heard they're in there. I'm hoping the water will be slow enough to be able to row my inflatable kayak up as well as downstream. [-o<

What about you?

What say you, anyone else with smallies on the mind? .....What about you?

Nope , never .

Smallmouth are for savages . Any self-respecting FFer will be fishing tiny dries on Bamboo for real fish , like Trout ...... not those horrible , nasty , non-native , trashy , warmwater creatures .

Oooops !! Gotta go to the cleaners and pick-up my tweed jacket ........

Where's Ed? Ed, did Matt ever accept any of your "services" to show you the creek where he caught this one?:

After hearing some great reports the last few years of late winter/early spring Smallie fishing, it's been on my mind for about 3-4 weeks now. I'm chomping at the bit, can't wait for these streams to calm down some.[-o<

Do tell, what would be the length of this float? Is it a half-day or all-day float? Have you already located a ready supply of rancid bear grease?

Back in my baitcasting days, I caught quite a few smallies in Snodgrass slough and Minor Slough in the Delta. In a bass boat you can launch at Hogback Island. I used to launch off the levee in Minor Slough. I haven't done too much fly fishing back there....yet. The largest smallmouth that we caught back there was around 2 lbs. which is good enough for me!

Rodney, funny you mention these sloughs, as I was studying my Delta maps just yesterday and looking at these very waters, including Prospect and Steamboat. Does Minor have much current? Could it be done in a float tube and make it back to the car without drifting hopelessly out to Hawaii?

Hey Hairstacker,
Steamboat would be a little risky in a tube as the current moves pretty good in there and there is much more boat traffic. Minor and prospect would work especially the south end of minor as you get closer to Clarksburg near Bogle Vineyards' winery. I spend many evenings after high school fishing that area in an old valco flat bottom boat. Your inflatable kayak would work great in Minor and there usually is very little boat traffic. There is some current in Minor but it's not too bad.

Rodney, thanks(!!), I appreciate your insights. I had considered scouting the North Delta for smallies for quite some time now but had been discouraged by the few reports I read of relatively strong water currents in certain areas.

2 potential trips in mind....

1) Drop toons or whatever in at Hallwood and float to Marysville(never done it)
2) Gridley to Live Oak, this one allows for bigger boats but lots of cool water

Both should be full day trips.

Rancid Bear grease? you smallmouth guys are goofy;)

For take out I can park my truck with my 18' flat bed and can shuttle alot of boats at once. Makes things a little easier.
