Not to get too off topic but I've been wondering what other activities everyone else is obsessed with outside of fishing and where FFing stacks up with them. Let's here it!

Messin' with cars and driving them on a racetrack and in autocross. I also used to fly stunt-kites competitively and was into yoyos for a while. And wayback I did some target archery. I guess anything with a string eh? :) I played woodwind instruments in school though, go figure...

Hmmm, obsessed. Not just an interest.

I'd go with birdwatching. I just can't turn that off.

Not the Abercrombie and Fitch/Audobon type either, I'm more of the creep closer and freeze til they ignore you type.

I've been pooped on by more birds than most chicken farmers.

I've gotten distracted many times right in mid sentence by some stupid bird. Just can't help myself. If I can't ID it off hand it'll just drive me nuts.

Cool stuff, everyone.
jbird, that is an awesome tank. I've got a soft coral tank and getting ready to make the metal halide leap.
My other (main) obsession is falconry. Been nuts about it since age 13. Unbelievable rush to watch those birds do their thing.

Wow, way cool (Peregrine?). That's like stunt kite and fighter kites with no strings! :) So do you eat the birds your falcon takes out? I imagine he (she) can't eat 'em all...

Amazing diversity of interests out there. Keep sharing everyone!

Don't get me started the list is too long. My wife always complains about which "obsession" it is this month. So here goes in no particular order:

Fly Fishing, fly tying

Hunting, anything but especially ducks!!! Carving my own decoys, making call lanyards, training dogs, photographing dogs working, reloading heavily for rifles and more and more with shotgun....

Photography, see my signature

Wood working, I make my own custom wood frames for my photos using mostly old-school handtools

Backpacking, best way to get away from people and out where most of the above only gets better.

Surfing when I was in better shape and drove to SD everyother week. Shaped and glassed my own 10' fat boy long board just to see how to do it.

Golfing, got a job at a driving range in college to learn and learned to make my own clubs.

Playing guitar, been playing for 21 years. Majored in music when I graduated but later switched to Bio/Env Studies. Ears still ring from years of Hendrix and SRV riffs. Old friend and childhood teacher works for major equipment manufacturers and taught me to build my own effects. He also played some of the tracks for Guitar Hero that millions of wankers now pretend to play along with. His name is James Santiago, you can see him demo some VoodooLabs stuff at Voodoolabvid on YouTube. The guy is AMAZING!

Brewing beer, drinking beer...

Basically if it involves tinkering, making your own gear or being outside I absolutley love it.
Oh and I will never in a million years make enough money to fully fund all my obsessions. People always told me that I would slowly lose some and while that has happined a bit I try to just cycle through them as the year goes on. The stack of magazines on the coffee table is ever changing.

Obsessed, maybe not.
But I spend an inordinate amount of time straddling my various bikes. One day you might find me riding along the A.R. pathway, the next Mt. Biking into some fishy locale. If you like fly fishing and solitude, it's a great way to separate yourself from the huddled masses.

Best, Dave

If Offshore convential fishing counts then that is one. Duck and Goose Hunting, Sowboarding, Wakeboarding, Baseball, Golf, Bowhunting, Rifle hunting, Family, My fish tank, not an elaborate saltwater like some on here unfortunately but I do have a an Oscar that does some serious damage to the goldfish population. I think thats it.

Still being single I can actually have time for it.

by far one of the most interesting threads I have read on here. I would say my son oliver, playing and recording music, and coaching high school baseball. one of my mentors in fly fishing said that passions become obsessions very easily and one should always have things to clear their mind of other things.

Fishinjohnny,
Where did you get that deer? I am only asking because it looks like you are sitting in a patch of either a Knapweed or maybe Canada Thistle? I am not trying to get your honey hole just wondering because those are plants my department tries to keep out of California. Depending on where you were it may not matter, especially if it is Canada Thistle (B rated) which is really wide spread, almost a lost cause in parts of California.

I guess I should mention staring at weeds is one of my obsessions as it's what I do 40 hours/week. They even jump out at me in photos on forums! Last year Cabelas had an add for one of their flyrods where the guy was standing in a stream surrounded by beautiful purple flowers. I spent 4 years trying to eradicate that stupid plant from the Bay/Delta watershed.

scuba diving - but only in warm climates - born and raised in the Philippines and been diving since around 15 - got certified here in the US at HSU in cold water and will pass on that. Hands down the most beautiful spot I have been is wall diving in Palau - straight vertical drop from 30 feet to over 1000 feet with huge schools of fish coming at you as you float along on a 2 knot current - lots of reef sharks and some of the bigger guys too.

Also backpacking though have not been in awhile and just traveling with my wife to some very cool tropical locations - St John at the top!!

I got him last year in Wyoming, just outside of Afton. Region G opening day. It was my first dear and I can honestly tell you after pulling the trigger I didn't notice a single weed. I was so hopped up on adrenaline I could barely find him after getting my buddies to help me.

Good thread Aaron...
Of course I would have to include my 3 yr old daughter and wife, but I am not so much "obsessed" about them as I am simply passionate.

So obsessed? I would have to admit it's hunting birds, waterfowl and upland game (good to see a lot of hunters on the board!)

Skiing... it's in my DNA

Getting into the backcountry... hiking, camping, skiing in winter

For the past 5 years, limited time allowed for only 1 obsession: fly fishing, fly tying, bamboo rod refinishing.
Business was slow last year so picked up another obsession: refinishing older recurve bows, making arrow quivers from thriftstore leather jackets; deer hunting w/the bows; and now interested in hunting wild turkey. (Ted1- could really use your help with some wild turkey locale in the Sac/Placerville area.)
