Here we go, swapmeister Bob here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You guys, you guys, you guys. I guess I'm the swampmeister or swampmonster, that will be decided later. Anyway I am gonna host this thing. First time, never done it before, so if I botch it up, hey where's the love?

Correct me if I'm wrong as I often am,

1. Sierra dry fly swap, fly picked from the post on the Trout and Stream section of this very board, the post about favorite ten dries for our Sierra's

2. Limit to 15 tyers? or if that's not good, what # is? I like 15 if we can get that many.

3. Flies sent to me in Fresno by April 8th.

4. Name your fly and who tied it with your flies.

5. Include some kind of return postage so I can ship your wonderful selection your about to receive.

6. Flies will be distributed at Kiene's expo on april 18th, that's a Saturday. If you can't make the Expo, see #5 above.

7. Tell me if you want them mailed or you will pick them up at the fly shop on expo day. Include this info with your flies.

8. So sign up and tie the same fly so everyone including yourself get one of your creations.

So, WHO is in?? Sign up and state your fly!

Bob

Signups.

1. Bob Scheidt, someting really neat, so in other words, I don't know yet. TBD

I'll do what I call a "Dry Bob" it is a great little dry fly taught to me by a guy named Bob. It is much better than the stimulators I attempt to tie.

It is a different Bob then Bob Scheidt.

Scott --I think it is a reference to Get Smart. I got it in a swap a few years ago and it has become a go to pattern for caddis before and near dark. I will show you next time you're over. I might even let you have one. Swap tie night next week?

BTW --This is close to the e/c caddis which I see now some one else is tying. If you guys want I can tie another pattern like a weir's whopper or some thing else

If it's OK w/ everyone ...... I'll do a Foam Madam X , Yellow , size 8 . I know it isn't on the Sierra list , but it's about the only dry I can do passably ..... since I don't tie/fish/use Dry Flies !

Did we miss somebody or am I tying a couple of sets, or even worse, is my evil twin running around? (I believe I was listed twice, #12 & #13)

If that evil twin guy is running around he should tie up some trudes for the swap.

In other words, I'll be happy too tie up a set of trudes if needed to fill out the swap.

For those who want to, I think it's cool to submit your recipe and photo, so here goes my stimulator:

http://bdigitaldesign.com/flies/stimulator.jpg

I'm still a beginner, so any feedback from you seasoned pros is more than welcome.

Hook: Tiemco 2312 (size 12)
Thread: Fluorescent orange
Tail: Elk hair
Rib: Copper wire (fine)
Abdomen: Golden Stone Antron dubbing
Body hackle: Brown rooster neck hackle
Wing: Elk hair
Thorax hackle: Grizzly rooster neck hackle
Thorax: Nature's Spirit orange dubbing

It's tied Charlie Craven style with a little egg sac on the rear.

And Ed, I'm going to send mine in one of the little Plano compartment boxes you can pick up from Walmart for less than $2.

Here is the tying instructions for the Kratville Caddis: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/022706fotw.php I now use the Tiemco 2488 instead of the 2302. The 2302 still works good on the larger Stone/Hopper size flies. I leave out the white underwing on the smallest patterns and use 2mm foam for both the body and wing. Shortly after writing this post for FAOL I came across John Barrs Dropper Hopper and realised my "new" technique had already been done :)

Bob Scheidt
03-08-2009, 09:54 AM
Davkrat, your new technique is just as new as John Barr's. I have often thought that if 2 people from different places come up with the same new idea, both are the originators since neither copied from anything and both can claim originality. If anything, John Barr saw yours and realized his new technique had been done before.

I did a lady bug and a short time later I saw Rainy Riding had a very close fly. Someone said, "Did you get the idea from Rainy's flies? and I said no, they copied me."

So far I have flies from J Burge and Shigspeed.

I have tied a total of zero, so I thinks me needs to get it in gear one of these days.

I have been dyeing alot of marabou lately. That's my latest tying tangent.

Shig does something pretty neat with those ant legs, perhaps he will tell us.

Mail them to me by April 6 or so and we should be fine.

I really need to apologize to you guys -

As I mentioned before .... I am the world's WORST dry fly tyer . My attempts at the Madam X have turned out like crap , so I'm switching to Andy Burk's Damsel Dry (so you will have something at least fishable) . Half-way thru and they look OK .....

They are Olive , size #10 . A bit on the large side for the mountains , but I think they will fish .

I hope I'm forgiven !!!

By popular demand, here's how I tied my black ant pattern:

1: Hooks, thread, foam:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050614.jpg

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050615.jpg

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050611.jpg

2: Round off the end of the strip of foam:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050613.jpg

3: Dress the length of the shank of the hook with thread and wind back to here:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050618.jpg

Now for the legs. I found this stuff at work so I don't know where you might find it. I've heard that synthetic paintbrush bristles work as well, but I couldn't find any that worked as well. This stuff is nylon (I think) wire loom sheath - like a Chinese finger torture tube:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050616.jpg

4: Cut four pieces of your leg material, long is okay as you'll be trimming later.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050617.jpg

5: Wrap the four pieces to the shank (I wrap to the top of the hook, though I don't know if it makes a difference) like so:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050621.jpg

6: Now wrap back a few more turns and then attach the foam to the hook. Start with loose turns first then tighter. Be careful not to let the foam pull around the hook and don't go so tight as to cut the foam!

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050622.jpg

7: Do the same for the middle segment of body and the head. Whip finish, and head cement. I like doing not only the head but the underside of the fly as well.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050624.jpg

8: Now take your tweezers and bend the antennae and legs. Depending on the material, you may need to use a hot razor blade or knife to make your legs "set" in whatever bend you put in it. This material takes a set kinda like wire with no heat.

You're done!

SHig, thanks for posting that sequence -- now we all just have to figure out where to get that elusive leg material.

Well, this has been a fun swap so far. I haven't tied parachute dries in so long I darn near forgot how to tie them. It's been fun to tie them again and it's been good practice, which is partly what I always hope to get out of participating in these swaps. A few more and I should be good to go. :D

Got my swap flies today!! \\:D/

Must say, a swap of top trout flies was a good idea because that's exactly what we ended up with here -- a go-to box of trout dry flies!

Impressive display of tying too. . . I think you fellas are really going to like these. :)

These are some really nice flie that will be put to the test once some snow has melted. Thanks to all that made this another great swap.

Agreed, lots of nice bugs!

I left a bag of ant leg materials with Bob so if you didn't pick some up at the expo, maybe you can arrange to pick them up or something.

After some of you guys came by, Shig dropped off a bag of the material he uses for those awesome ants. Honest, I'm not holdin out on you. A section will tie a whole bunch of ants.

If you want a piece, send me a self adressed return envelope and I will send you a section.

A single stamp will get it back to you. This stuff folds flat, so any envelope will do.

Good to put a face with a name yesterday at the expo, thanks for stopping by.

Good fly swap guys!!

Bob,

Thanks again for running the swap...if I hadn't been heading off to fish I probably would have hung out and bs'd a little more. Anyway great job on the swap and as for your idea "we should do this more often" I agree count me in....

:) Got my swap flies today. Great looking flies, thanks for letting me join in. I can see them getting a try on Sunday. I'll be out of town on the opener.

Bob, thanks for hosting. Now there needs to a top ten nymph swap.

Great idea! To help this along, I started a thread in the "Trout" section of this board to identify those nymphs. :D
