I think my all time favorite pattern for bass is the Umpqua Swimming Minnow. I love that fly, I love how it fishes, and it's been very productive for me. I tie up some of my own... its is a variation on the soggy head series... it is another diving deer hair bug that has an upturned hook. It is effectivly weedless and can be tied up in any color combinaion you want. I like tying up frog patterns in this style.

Assuming you’re asking about largemouth bass:

During summer, I only fish topwater and do so with these 3 deer hair bass bugs:

Green/yellow Dahlberg Diver
Black/yellow Dahlberg Diver
Red/white Tap’s Bug

I have total confidence in these three and assume the fish aren't there or aren't hungry if I'm not getting 'em.

Once topwater dies off in early winter with the plummeting water temps, I go strictly subsurface using one of these 5”-long flies in either chartreuse/white, as shown, or olive/white:

I’ve also had good fortune fishing chartreuse/white Clouser Minnows slowly with big pauses during winter time.

For early spring before the topwater season takes off, I haven’t really committed to a specific set of patterns, although I plan to work on it. :D

It really depends on what flavor of Bass , and where I'm fishing .

First , choose the water -

Lakes (Man-made , or natural .... though I don't fish many natural lakes here ...) .

Ponds (nearly all have LMB , but no Spots/Smallmouth) .

Delta (mostly LMB) .

Streams (all four species) .

The stuff I'd choose for .... say , Lake Amador , would be VERY different than the working flies I'd pick for a place like Folsom Lake .

My Stream gear is almost always the same , no matter if I'm chasing Smallies , LMB , Spots , or Redeyes . Small Divers , Muddlers , Leeches , Dragonfly Nymphs , tiny Minnows , My Sculpin , and Craws .

The Delta ? Large Divers , foam surface bugs , and 1/0 Chart/White Clousers .

In Lakes I like Clousers (up to a size #2) , big Buggers , My Craw , Whit's Sheep wakers , and Zonkers .

Ponds ?? Sneaky Petes , Zonkers , Divers , Dragon Buggers .

If I could take only ONE box for EVERYTHING - I would pack it with ....

Chart. Sneaky Pete -#6
Clousers #6 , #2
Zonkers #6 , #4
Buggers #6 , #4
Craws #2 , #4
Dahlberg Divers #2 , #1/0
Leeches #8-4
Dragonbuggers #6
#10 Beaded Olive Birdnest
