I will be headed to Dillions Beach and camping at Lamsons Landing which is at the mouth of Tomales Bay. Can I take my pontoon into Tomales Bay for fishing or should I stick to surf fishing? I have never been so I have no idea of what to expect.

Hey Scott, I've kayaked pretty much the entire length of the bay from near Inverness to Tomales Bay State Park. For our group, it was definitely smoother water the further away from the mouth we got. And since we were in kayaks we stuck close to the shoreline. I would really hesitate to get out in open water. Don't know what it's like up near Dillon, but imagine that the inlets will have good wind protection.
And oh yeah, Carl's right. When my wife found out (after the fact) that there could've been great whites, she was not real thrilled ;-)

I know a guy that was surfing near Dillion Beach about 20 years. He was on a 9 ft. longboard and he told me that a 12-15 ft great white passed under his board as he was paddling across a strecth of deep water. He said he almost sh*t in his wetsuit. He didn't go back out there. Jeff

Looks like I am going to need a bigger boat.
Thanks for the heads up everyone, I will stick to surf fishing.

Scott,
Right there off Dillons beach, by Lawson's where you're staying, there should be barred and rosetail perch now. Inside the bay by the dock, you should have jacksmelt available to you. Up (north of Dillon's) the beach near Stemple Creek you have rock structure to mess with. All shore stuff.

PS - I would try a 14"-18" deceiver for the whites. ;-)

Scott, nobody mentioned the fact that the mouth of Tomales is very dangerous during a falling tide. As the current runs out it backstops against the surge and creates some very rough water. Not a place you should be in most boats, regardless of the sharks.
If you have a minus tide, there's a great clamming opportunity from Lawson's Landing. Combine that with Lee's suggestions.... :unibrow:
Hope you have a good trip. :D

Thanks for the advice and heads up on the possible dangerous conditions. I believe I will stick to fushing the surf. Maybe I'll take my 12 weight and try for 1 of those great whites, but then again how would I land it, I do not think I could reach down and lip it like a bass.

You could always try for leopard sharks.... THOSE are intense to catch.
