My buddy landed this fish earlier this week about 1 mile above tidewater. She was absolutely white hot. There was not a hint of color on this fish. She was pure ocean and absolutely incredible. I am still totally jacked up about this fish! Steelhead are soooo cool!

I was thinking the same thing... Chromer! That is a fish that will become invisible in the stream... a ghost so to speak! Absolutely Beautiful!

Wow, what a great steelie. The only way you could beat that is to actually catch it out in the ocean, lol

Jack McGloughlin was a Sacramento City Firefighter, US Marine and a great fly fisherman of the great generation. Not sure if he is still here with us....?

He showed me how to tie a Steelhead flies right on the counter at West Capitol Rod & Gun, a bait-n-tackle shop I worked in around 1970.

Jack told me the ultimate fly fishing experience was to hook a fresh run 10# hen Steelhead in the winter on our north coast within a few miles of the ocean.

I was lucky enough to be able to do that on the Gualala, Garcia and Eel Rivers in the next few years.

Thanks Jack............

Nice. So reflective.

What river did that come out of?

Sorry to be a tease speyfool but I am not able to name that particular river. Pretty sure there are some fellows out there that would take me out if I disclosed that place on the internet! Matt.

Everyone is so secretive. :)

Sometimes I wonder if we are fishing or dealing with national security. :D

If you think real hard and look at the water it gives you a few options based on what has been open recently. If, that is, it was caught in California..........

As much as it would be nice to know, the reason small water can sustain small runs is there is not a lot of pressure and name dropping on the FF forums!!!

Its not hard to get a map and a phone and find rivers with fish.....my GPS maps have as many dots as there are pimples on the proverbial 13 year olds face.....

Trick is the timing.....you just have to be there.

...and if we were dealing with National Security you would already know what river it is...

No offense guys but get over yourselves. As much I don't like to share water either I do realize most places I hold near and dear are shared by others with the same passion and even, god forbid, bait chuckers. I know it makes people feel high and mighty to say look what I dragged out of my secret spot between Caracas and Beirut but if someone isn't willing to share a location we should just appreciate a simple picture or tidbit without pithy tyler durden references or comments bragging about how much secret stoke you have and how nobody will ever pry it from you or blah blah blah.

Just my opinion, not meant as a flame. Ambiguity is much more enjoyable than arrogance.

BTW beautiful fish matt, thanks for sharing wherever it came from, whoever caught it. I'm pretty sure it's either from sailor bar or the low flow of the feather :p

I've got a little different attitude towards this quandry. Don't go showing pic's if you are so special that you are the only fisherman who should be fishing a stream.
In other words either shut up and quit bragging or fill everyone else in. You put your pants on just like overyone else.

For years I have always helped other fishermen out, that is the spirit of fishing and I am still willing to tell someone about fish I have posted on this site.If you are sworn to secrecy then don't post the picture and don't bring it up.

It isn't a single fishermans decision how many rods should be on a stream, you want privacy move to the Yukon. Smug attitudes are for wanna be's

I have a few spots I don' t mention mostly because they are private access.Especially if someone else took me to that spot.

590mike I agree with you, we as fisherman should be willing to help others out and I believe that most of us are. The only problem I find with saying specific names of streams/rivers on the internet forum is then a simple google search will draw up the thread and then the cat is out of the bag so to speak.

I have shown a many fisherman and talked to many fisherman about rivers, i just don't agree with posting names on the forum, PM's however, are a different story. Often times they result in a friendship or at the very least a good day fishing with someone new.

Hope everyone has been getting out recently!

Please don't! I appreciate the fish pic without knowing where it came from. If he has put in the time to find this place and timed it right GREAT job. Looking at me gets me pretty damn excited to go eat cold chicken noodle soup for a couple days.
Thanks for the picture and i hope there are more to come

Stop whining.....if you cant appreciate a steelhead from an unnamed river, dont look at photos.

The entire virtual world listened to the bragging about steelhead in the Trinity last year, and came in droves from all over the world. The list of guides who managed to get BLM guide permits, included some from Newe Zealand, Montana, etc., (and this did not include guides who were guiding illegally without permits).
There were up to anywhere from 40-60 boats on the small/narrow part of the Trinity on a daily basis.
This year was back to a less crowded scene, because we will never see the incredible return of hatchery fish like last year.
I and most of you who frequent this board should share pics and stories without naming the river or where you are fishing, and we should all learn from this lesson.

The entire virtual world listened to the bragging about steelhead in the Trinity last year,

I don't know if this was the case on the Trinity (last year or any year). However, I know that I often see the most bragging about rivers and number of fish from guides. Trying to get more clients and to look like the #1 guy to go to.

Personally, I love to share information just because I feel good about it. My blog shares the places I go and what happened there. (Although I've stopped naming exact runs for the most part. To me, that's the best compromise. Name the river but keep exact spots to yourself.) I get a lot of people thanking me and I've made a lot of friends through it. Because I was willing to share. However, I have pissed off at least one person from it. So be it.

If the river is small and cannot handle the traffic, I guess I can understand being quiet. Although, I must admit sometimes it bothers me when someone brags about a spot openly on a forum then shuts up and continues to tease like a high school girl. (--- This does not really fit for this thread. I'm talking in Generalities --)

But just seeing a picture without pushing it, it's okay with me. I like looking at the fish porn!

And just to be clear, in this case, Matt has only posted twice in this entire thread -- the original post to share the picture and only one other post to say he couldn't identify the water in response to someone who asked.

Very true. I edited my post because after re-reading it- it may of sounded like I was talking about this thread. When really, I was talking generalities. :)
