Will the Orvis B.S. Battenkill V have enough capacity for a mid sized two handed outfit? I'm thinking of holding a 550 grain skagit line or head with a running line. Any suggestions or am I asking too much for this reel.

I've got a gift card and the catalog is having a sale right now.

That Battenkill BS V reel is a little small (~8/9). Better for a small Spey or most Switch rods.

The Battenkill LA Big Game in a V is the better choice.

The average 'rule of thumb' is go up 2 sizes in single hand reels for a Spey rod.

7/8 Spey rod = 9/10 single hand reel

I was wondering about that. The Technical data on the BK V had it going up to an 11 wgt. I guess the next question would be what Skagit type head would you typically pair up with a 8 wgt 12' 6" two handed rod.

I would likely opt for between 550 and 650 skagit for an 8 wt
