View Full Version : Fly Swap - Lake Flies For This Spring!

Hairstacker

Well, here we are in the depths of winter wondering what’s going to happen to our fishies’ water, whether it’s okay to kill and eat hatchery steelhead, whether it’s a good thing trout hatchery stocking will be severely curtailed, whether to carry a gun while fishing, whether it’s safe and proper to eat raw stripers. . . . . Clearly perfect timing for another fly swap, eh?

Given the recent one-fly contest hosted by Scott V., I thought it might be interesting to all to see what folks are using for fishing lakes. After all, it won’t be long before spring lake fishing really takes off again for trout and smallmouth bass. Thus, let’s do a swap of flies for fishing lakes this spring!

For those who don’t know, a fly swap involves tying up a set of identical flies and sending them in. The swap host (me) will then sort the flies so that you get back one of each type of fly each person sent in, plus one of your own back. This is a great way to hone your skills tying your favorite flies, and it feels like Christmas when you get a package back in the mail. It also helps maintain your sanity when you can’t get on the water.

This swap will be limited to 12 people counting myself so everyone needs to tie 12 flies. Flies will need to be put in the mail by 18 February 2009. I will PM everyone who signs up with the mailing address for your flies. When you send in your flies, please include a self-addressed mailing envelope with sufficient postage. Finally, also please put a “toe tag” (little slip of paper) on each fly hook with your username and name of fly – that way everyone will know who to contact to seek additional details regarding the pattern.

I want to sincerely emphasize this is most definitely not just for veteran fly tyers – EVERYONE, especially those who have just started learning how to tie flies, is very strongly encouraged to participate. As long as it is intended for spring lake fishing, it can be as simple or as complicated a fly as you feel comfortable tying. Above all, this is meant to be fun!

If you want in, please sign up by replying to this thread and indicate, if you know, the fly type and/or fly name or just state “TBD” (To Be Determined). Sign up deadline is 18 January 2009:

1. Hairstacker – Jurassic Sculpin - Flies Completed

3. WT - black foam beetles - Flies Received

No kidding, I'm actually shocked it filled up so fast! No doubt, some will see this thread over the next few days and feel they missed out but hopefully there will be more swaps occurring in the near future as well. Anyway, really appreciate everyone who signed up!

As some of you sweat over your vises, please try to wipe it off right away so your vise doesn't rust and relax and remember this is supposed to be about having fun!

I agree, it sounds like a great idea! I'll leave it up to each person to individually decide if they would like to do this and, if so, hope they feel free to do so. Since the fly list includes a mix of trout and smallie flies, I think it would also be very helpful to identify the fly's intended-target fish species.

As soon as I tie one of mine up this weekend, I'll try to post a picture and recipe. Thanks for the suggestion Darian!:thumbsup:

Yes I am one who has seen this thread and feel like I missed out, my loss.
I am still tying. I just sent a box of flies to the Nortwest flytyers expo, March, Albany Oregon. Next I am going to send a box to the Idaho tyers expo, also March, but in Boise.

Makes me feel good to participate with other tyers to raise funds for the fishes.

I just dyed up a batch of marabou, from white to olive. I hit the color I was after, right on.

I had the stuff in the dye bath for 24 hours.

Be talking to ya.

I would be sorely remiss if I didn't mention that one of our very own swap members, David Lee, will be tying at the International Sportsmans' Exhibition (ISE) in Sacramento this weekend! If you go, I know nothing would please David more than if you stopped by and say, "Hi!" I also know he would really enjoy the opportunity to answer any tying questions you may have. I know I've learned something new every time I've sat in front of him and watched him tie.

Thanks for the plug , Mike !!!

The Tyers at the ISE Tyers row are ALL Black belts - most are 7th-degree Black belts ! Spend 10 minutes in front of ANYBODY there and you ARE going to learn something !!

I also agree 100% about Bob Scheidt - He's a hell of a tyer , and a great guy on top of that !! If Bob is at Kienes Expo .... DO NOT miss seeing him -

I'll second that advice about not missing the tiers at the expo. I went yesterday and spent most of my time in utter amazement.

And so I humbly submit my beginning fly tying efforts for the fly swap. It's a black Doc's Twin Lake Special:

Thanks for the kind words Stacker and David. You guys are top notch. I will be at Kiene's expo as long as they will have me.

2 new tying products you may already know about. Both from Hareline.

1. Grizzly krystal flash, it's barred and looks really good, comes in 3 colors.

A: black/red
B: copper/blue
C: silver/black

2: Metz magnum saddles, finally a saddle with big long feathers on it. For tying sizes 1,2,4, an 6.

jburge -- Very nice! Looks like it's intended for trout but I suspect if you bounce it down a rocky shoreline you'll probably pick up some smallies with it as well. Good show!

Hairstacker, thanks. It's a start, and as a beginner having a chance to participate in the swap is going to be just the right amount of pressure to step up the game.

And yep, it's a trout bug. For those who haven't seen it before, it was developed by "Doc" Randol in the '80's for the lakes around Mammoth (one of my all time favorite spots). I think it'd be a blast to try it for some smallies too.

Dark brown marabou tail:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050531.jpg

Gold monoflash, cut length, couple of turns at mid length, then fold over, couple more winds for two strands on either side of the fly:

Make a dubbing loop (don't'cha love the V-day tablecloth?):

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050538.jpg

I mixed these three (about equal brown stone and dark brown and then a pinch of the ice dub):

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050545.jpg

Load up the dubbing loop (most time consuming part of the whole thing) and spin your bobbin to the head of the fly. Take small bunches of dubbing load, spin, load spin, load, spin:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050547.jpg

Take the dubbing "rope" and wrap towards the head, picking and teasing as you go to get an even, sparse fuzzy bug:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050548.jpg

Pull out all loose fibers for re-use, trim if needed, final tease, and whip finish and head cement:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t177/shigspeed/Fishing/Flies/Tying/P1050551.jpg

Enjoy! Now I need to make 11 more...

Those little guys are a size 8 and it uses a micro pine squirrel zonker strip. VERY easy to tie and a great little fish catcher (still or moving water). It's quickly taking over as my streamer of choice.

_SHig and Woolybugger -- Great looking flies!

My fly also uses a pine squirrel strip and looks a little like those Slump Busters with some differences. I think pine squirrel is perfect for smaller flies in lieu of using rabbit. I've seen it in natural, olive, sculpin olive, burnt orange, brown, and chartreuse, but I don't think I've ever seen it in purple.

Thanks guys...

I also haven't seen the pine squirrel in purple. However, you can use any color for the belly and rib, so I bet purple diamond braid with a purple wire rib would look great with a black pine squirrel (which I do have). That would certainly be dark and it would give off significant flashes of purple. I'll try to tie one of those up and post a picture so see what you think.

This is my first swap and I'm really looking forward to seeing (and using) all of these great flies!

It's always cool to get some topwater flies into the mix and as soon as I saw these, I couldn't help but immediately think of a couple of ponds where fish will be shoving themselves out of the way to get at these things. :D Moreover, I don't know if it's coincidence, but the size of these flies will appeal to just about everything -- trout, bass, panfish, etc.

Guess what, got more swap flies in the mail today!! Yep, Modified Rickards Seal Buggers from Terry Thomas and Suspended Damsel Fly Nymphs from Gene Goss!! \\:D/

Man, wait until you see the colors on these seal buggers -- black with overtures of red and ice blue and wrapped with a bow in purple. Okay, I shouldn't get so carried away -- they're not wrapped in a bow but palmered. But, they are darn fishy-looking flies.

The suspended damsels are just as pictured above -- in other words, if you're not catching fish on these it's probably time to pack it in and go home. Now we just have to figure out how to tie them. :unibrow:

Aside from these great swap flies, Gene also very kindly included two extra flies just for me! Yep, two wiggletails in 2 different colors!! I've been very curious about Gene's wiggletails ever since reading his posts about his catching experiences at Rancho Seco and Davis -- what could possibly be better than having my very own copies? \\:D/ I'll be tying a bunch of these for sure. :D

Thank you fellas!! Very nice flies that will round out the collection we're assembling here very nicely. I can tell we are all going to end up with a go-to box of lake flies . . . lucky us! :D

Yet another fly pattern that no lake box could possibly be complete without. And if that wasn't enough, Flycanoe very kindly included an extra fly for me! Guess what? Yep, got the final set of swap flies today!! Olive beadhead woolly buggers from Guppy! \\:D/

Is there anyone who would ever doubt the usefulness of having such a fly in your box? I didn't think so. :D

Thank you Guppy, good job! =D>

Well, I need to add toe tags to six sets (i.e., 72 flies), as well as acquire and address some envelopes. I also need to assess whether some of the containers used will actually fit all the flies for the return trip and figure out what to do if they don't. All in all, I expect to get this all sorted out and have them in the mail within the next couple of days. I'll post again once I've mailed them. :D

Just an update to let you know I mailed all the flies at the post office earlier today!! \\:D/ \\:D/ \\:D/ :D

Hopefully, they all arrive at their destinations without incident. I did get a little concerned after the post office clerk warned me about mailing flies in business envelopes, since these go through the machine and stuff can happen. On the other hand, they arrived at my location without a problem, so I am assuming they will go out the same. [-o<

Rest assured I only sent flies in business envelopes when that was what was provided by the fly swapper. For the most part, I mailed stuff in the boxes, packages, etc., provided by the swapper or, when that was not possible, I upgraded to a sturdy mailing envelope intended for these purposes. With that said, I am a little concerned about those who provided sandwich baggies or equivalent for their flies. In this regard, I would highly recommend obtaining a cheap 5-compartment hard-plastic Plano box next time -- they're less than $2 at Wal Mart, and they are much better to prevent hackles from getting mashed, etc., and thus you're more likely to get the flies back in the condition the tyers intended, and it provides extra room in the box in case others tied flies much larger than yours.

Ah well, it most definitely was not a big deal on my end and hope you don't take these comments as being critical because they're most certainly not intended that way -- just helpful suggestions for future swaps to make sure you get your flies back in the safest, best condition possible.

Once again, I want to sincererly thank everyone who joined in this swap, you guys are great!! And a special thank you to those who provided extra flies -- this was/is never expected but I'm very appreciative just the same. As the host, it was truly a lot of fun. Aside from the pleasure you had tying your flies, I think you'll find it was well worth your efforts when you see these flies. I know that is true for me! Hopefully, we will do another one really soon. If someone has an idea for another swap and would like to host, by all means have at it! If it's something I can tie within the specified due date, I will certainly join in. :unibrow: Thanks again fellas!! :D

I haven't received my flies yet.

Guppy, they were addressed to "Guppy" per your self-addressed envelope and I wondered if that might cause a problem. I also didn't recognize the town you listed on your envelope.

Anyway, I would give them another day or two and if they haven't arrived by then I would check with your post office.

Oh, thank goodness! I would hate for any of these flies to get lost in the mail.
