I'm switching all my reels over to braid(bionic) and have been installing braided mono loops for the flylines and running lines(Blanton's double catch). The last connection is the GSP to the braided loop on the fly line. I've googled and read most of the posts on Blanton, as well as a number from Aus. sites. I got a headache. Coaxial splices, 100 turn biminis(or 12 turn) and all other manner of method and madness. So, last nite I tried this: I ran the GSP through about 12" of braided mono. Then I just did a regular double catch loop, followed by a nail knot above and one below second catch. I didn't have any Loctite, but this connection seems strong-at least the braid didn't slip. Anybody see a problem with this?

I just double the braid back on tiself then double it back again and make a triple surgeons knot. It makes a big double loop that as strong as anything and it takes about 30 seconds.

John,

What you are doing will probably be fine. The problem with gel spun is the thin-ness of the line can cut through most anything when used as a single strand.

If you create a loop knot of any kind in the end of the gel spun you have doubled the strand count. (bimini, double surgeon, etc. loop)

Now you have twice the thickness of strand to reduce the cutting ability of the gel spun.

If you where to practice making a large bimini, then fold the loop over, and tie a double surgeon at the base, you will have created a four strand loop. This many strands will not cut through any fly line loop and reduces the bulkiness of having a second braided loop to loop.

I've used this set up for years on all of my reels that have gel spun and this gives the smoothest transition from a small single strand backing to a thick fly line.
