Opener was better than it's been for me in the last couple of years. It seems there are more fish in the system this year but smaller on ave.

I was swinging a string leach on the spey rod at Rossmore from noon to 4:40pm. Fished it from the take out riffle to the big pipe, through the deep trough below the pipe, and through the faster water further down the bar. Nothing to be seen or felt in the upper section. Missed one grab in the first section of faster water downstream and landed one halfpounder in the lower fast water. Saw one other halfpounder landed there as well.
Lots of beatis hatching around 1-2pm. Also, lots of boats hatching at Rossmore (6-7 trailers). The boat anglers I chatted with had skinny reports; mostly halfpounders and one 10lbs'er heard of.
Not a lot of fish on my line, but a great way to start the year off! :)

I'm hearing the same.... a little slow just yet. I'm thinking of hiring a couple Hooter type girls and selling coffee and "snacks" till the fishing picks up. Bill does Simms have a "hoochie honey " line of clothing"?

We had a good report today from some people who fish the river daily.
I think I will see if they will take me along?

I began fishing the opener on the north side of the river above the Sailor Bar boat ramp. Got two steelies within the first hour, one half pounder that was about 19 to 20 inches and very fat. Looks like the fish had been in the river for a while. It was bronze color with a dark red stripe. The second fish was 25 inches. It was much cleaner, still silver with the beginnings of a red stripe. Left sailor bar because of the number of people and went to sunrise. Fished indicator and swung flies, nothing caught at sunrise. I did talk to a lady that stated here husband had gotten 10 steelies. Sizes ranged from half pounders to adults. She said they were caught of buggers (black and brown). I assuming the fish were caught off of the spawning beds about the riffle/rapid.
I saw quite a few of fish caught while I was up at sailor, however most fish were small.

Is your name Scott? I think I met you that day, I was fishing near you that day. If so, sorry again for letting that 2nd fish go before you got a pic. Take Care, Nick

Yes Nick that is me. It was nice meeting you and thanks for your help. Did you have any hookups opening day? Maybe I will see you on the river again.

Troutbelly I think I'm gonna have to get to Kienes for that ! I can only imagine the "fly selection" and this is a family type board so I'll behave.

Not too long left I hooked into something that almost took me into my backing. I was thinking that it was pretty unreal to hook into a fish that nice on opening day. After a while I finally got it in and it turned out to be 1 of the biggest suckerfish I've ever seen. I was a little disappointed but it was still a great fight.

My first fish on my big 9 weight steelhead rod was a big 6-8 pound Sucker just above the Watt Avenue Bridge about 40 years ago.
A big Sucker can feel pretty good on a fly rod............kind of like a Carp or Redfish?
