Rancho Seco

Well the weather was nice today, so loaded up the boat and headed down to Seco arrive at noon. Tried several coves on the north side of the lake. Nothing... Talked to another flyfisherman and the same for him. Power bait was working on the shore line. Buzzed over to the south boat ramp hoping for better luck in the cove. Another guy running a Rapala picked up three and lost them as I moved into the cove. He finally brought two nice fat rainbows to his boat using an orange Rapala. I tried flyfishing for awhile and then broke out a regular Rapala and trolled with the same result. Went back to the north boat ramp and fly fished for a while longer and packed up to be home for dinner. Again the weather was nice and I enjoyed the day on the water. I will be back after the holiday.... maybe with the skunk gone? Bill

I have heard it has been tough fishing, maybe you should go out when it is raining and try your luck in foul weather.

I am hoping that it will turn on soon. Might try again this coming weekend. Need to finish my casting platform for my boat first, so I can stand and cast to the fish easier. Bill

Fished the North side today.....and found a honey bucket in a cove.....and the 3 of us caught over 25.....beween 16 inches and 4lbs......i used a small black wiggle tail.....and Jim Holmes used something small and black with something special for Rancho Seco!!!!!!

Oh, so I need to have some special "Jim Holmes flies" to catch fish at Rancho??? It looks like I might go down after New Years day. Too many family things going on around the home and want to spend a whole day on the water. Bill

If you find a pod, it can be a great say on the water. Ed and I hae found a pod out there before and caught a mess load of fish.

bill drop me a line when you decide to head out there, I plan on going atleast once this New Years holiday weekend.

I got out there around 11 or so today. Met Scott V. when I was on my out to check out the last lot on the north side. Scott had a dismal report for that end of the lake. I flipped a, er, made a u-turn and followed Scott over the dam to the docks.

We fished that area for the rest of the afternoon. There were trout riseing over a pretty wide area. They were taking the bees that fell to the water. I know because me and Scott both watched it happen. My floating line was within easy reach, if I was at home standing next to the kitchen table. D'oh!

Anyway, they would take a 'bugger that was yellow with black hackle, at least a few of them would. We each caught a few, and lost a few. It was plenty of action to keep you interested.

Took my buddy Duke out with me this time to see how he'd do. Except for an initial leap out the window to go chase geese all went well. He took up his station in the pram and held up his end all day long. He never once criticized my casting, boat handling, or release technique. I gotta say though, he is hard to impress. A 5lb trout was only worth a sniff and a bored yawn. Geez.

Headed out to Seco on Sunday, on the drive over it was nothing but pea soup thick fog, which was making me not to happy. I spent Wednesday in the fog and was not looking forward to sitting in more fog. But as soon as I pulled up to the front gate the fog disappeared and the sky opened up to some beautiful weather. No wind and no fog, what more could one ask for. I launched at the end of the gravel road and fished the far end of the lake with no luck. So I decided to load up the toon and head to where I knew there were fish. On the way to the other side of the lake I ran into Ed and Duke and told them of my poor luck so they followed me over. After about an hour or so of watching fish rise but not getting any hook ups, Ed found where they were eating and called me over. We both ended the day with a couple nice fish to hand. All in all a nice day on the water. I'll post some pics tonight, I have a good pic of Ed with a rel nice fish with Duke looking on with little to no excitement on his face.
