As I am gearing up and getting educated about Spey flyfishing (mostly by this forum), I came across a posting on another forum about using up to 3 flies with an application of spey casting. They were using a top fly they identified as a spey fly, and the other flies were either standard steelhead wet flies or other spey flies, (they did mention that they tried nymphs and egg flies aslo but were not as successfull).
Is this multiple fly set-up used generally for steelhead, and are they swinging or nymphing the flies or both?

If you are just starting in the two hand game, I would suggest that you use caution with more than one fly. Tangles and lost flies are always a challenge when starting out. As far as flies on the swing, I would say the majority of casters use a single fly. There conditions when some anglers use two flies. In low water situations some people may use a smaller "more natural" pattern behind their first fly. A second situation may occur when salmon are on the redds. In this case some people choose to us an egg pattern as their bottom pattern. As for three flies, perhaps in a high sticking situation or under, under, not easy to say.. an indicator.
