This was reported by Keith Kaneko who took a drive to check things out.

He saw some big ones in there already.

Better get out on the lower American River soon.

Veteran Lower American River Steelheaders Al Perryman and Joe Shirshac both say that December is the time to intercept those big winter-run Steelhead as they head upstream to the hatchery.

Bill I've heard the same thing. haven't been able to get out.I did get to the FISH meeting on the 4th. We looked at the side channel garvel work below Sunrise bridge and then they covered the water temp/volume issues for the year during a presentation at the Aquatic center. Its amazing how much work is going into getting the water temps and flows in check, especially with 2008 being the 13th lowest water/year input to Folsom.

How long can we expect to see the winter run steelhead in the American?

This year I fished for "winter run steelies" till the end of Feb,but the "blue backs " were starting to show downstream about the same time. By mid March most of the winter fish were really dark and scarce. Between March and April we were into some nice fish on emergers and often the caddis that swims to the stream bottom and lays her eggs is a good pattern to match. Oh yea.... I forgot to mention .... stay away there are poisonous vampire jackrabbits and lazer-eyed tree squirrels everywhere.

I hate those damn wookies. One thing I did hear though is the american chrome squirts lightening bolts out their butts when they jump. God save anyone nearby.
