Hey all,

I hit the Truckee last week with my son to try and hook into those elusive browns beefing up for the winter. Well, no such luck for us with the browns. We did have some action. We fished the Hirschdale exit, east some. We only fished for a few hours. I caught 5 (1 rainbow and 4 whitefish) and my son caught 1.

It was a lovely day. Water temp was 44F and the air temp was up in the low 50's. We fished in long-sleeved t-shirts in November at 6,000' elevation. CRAZY!

I took a river siene and found a ton of brown cadisfly larvae. So, we fished a right-angle system with a brown foxpupa nymph on the lower fly and a LaFontaine deep sparkle pupa on the rising nymph.

The highlight of the day was that I had a double hookup! It was two whitefish, but it still was cool!

Here's the pix...

Whitefish are nasty, but a double hookup on two 19" fish is still pretty cool!

Fun report! Those whitefish take a lot of abuse as "trash fish". Neat to see them celebrated. Thanks for sharing. B

Looks like you two had a great day. Your son's a lucky guy, like I was. Fishing with my pop--those days started over 40 years ago and are still strong in my memory. Way to go, Rick.

(nice fish, too)

isn't there a difference between whitefish and suckers? the fish your son has looks like a whitefish, the double hookup looks like suckers. i'm probably wrong though.

I think Rocky Mountain White Fish get a little more respect than Squawfish/Sacramento Pike because they live in colder streams like the Truckee River and the Henry's Fork of the Snake River.

Where else have any of you caught them?

I have heard they are good eating? I think they smoke them too.

Ive caught white fish in the Swan River in Montana, and in a handful of small creeks that drain into the upper Colorado River. I've actually heard that the only way to get them to taste half way decent is to smoke them.

Those 2 fish in the last photo are definitly white fish. Many rivers in central oregon have them...Metolius, Crooked, Deschutes...to name a few. They have saved me on many a troutless day! Tho I used to look down on them a bit cause they can be over abundant and beat the trout to the fly.

I have eaten them and theyre nasty!!

I'm originally from Maine where we have two species of whitefish: lake and river. I believe at one time they were a somewhat celebrated sportfish there but definitely not now.

I've also caught whitefish in some mountain streams in Utah and Henry's Fork of the Snake.

For all of your whitefish paraphenelia check these guys out:

I have caught countless mountan whitefish on the Bitterroot in Mt. I did not know that we could find them this close to home. Where you find one, there is always another to follow. They not only accept the same flies as our resident trout, but they will pull to the point that you think you have a decent brown on.
