Fished the Klamath from Klamathon Bridge to Iron Gate on Saturday with two friends. Cloudy and cool. Waded several spots. We caught 50 plus fish (mainly half pounders) with a half dozen fish up to seven pounds. There seemed to be willing fish everywhere. It was so good one of my buddies and I decided to fish it again. Sunday was clear and sunny. Fished all the same places for 2 fish total. Finally fished a different spot and caught another half dozen fish. All fish were caught in the shade. Two days, two completly different results. Go figure.

Hey Ed, thanks for the report. My friends and I are going to fish the Klamath next weekend, 12/6. What were the hot flies? Was the egg pattern still working? Where did you stay? We are probably going to stay at the Blue Heron RV park. We have done the Iron Gate/Klamathon Bridge drift several times but we may want to try other drifts as well. Does anyone out there recommend any other drifts? I have read about the Cade Mountain drift down by Happy Camp which looks to be 1 and1/2 hours drive from Hornbrook. Is there any shuttle service in the Happy Camp area? Any advice on this river will be greatly appreciated. Ed, do you happen to have a green Clackacraft? Me and my buddies have seen some guys from the East bay in a green/grey/black Clacka almost exactly the same colors as ours.

My fishing buddy has a cabin at Dunsmuir, so we stayed there. We fished from shore, I'd like to have a green Clackacraft or any color for that matter, but don't. Hot flies seemed to be large black rubberlegs, egg-sucking leeches and globugs. I don't know if there is any shuttle service by Happy Camp. You might want to call the Fly Shop in Redding or Ted Fey's Shop in Dunsmuir. You might be able to google it?

There is a shuttle at Happy Camp. It is the Klamath River Inn. This may not be the exact name, but it is right at Indian Creek, on the right side of the road if you are heading down river. It is at the far end of town. shuttles are $25.00. Ive used them numerous times and never had a problem.

I was there a week before ed. We 2 caught twelve recordable steelhead (16 - 26") over two days, and maybe 20 or so smaller fish (8-15"), on egg patterns - orange or pink, 8-10 mm, #6-#8 hooks. Both cloudless days. Not red hot action, but enough to keep things interesting. Several of the larger fish were fat and hard fighting.
There were 4-6 other parties drifting each day. I did see another group pull in several half-pounders with black rubberlegs.

visited family in Eureka this weekend so hauled up my jet boat and hit the lower Klamath for two short days - very slow but it was nice getting out and limbering up the spey casts - no one else on the river (they were the smart ones!!) but saw eagles and just gorgeous sunny days with a few half pounders.
Actually saw a seal all the way up at Techtah so he was chasing something??

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll be fishing the lower sac on thursday and then the klamath fri, sat & sun. We plan on drifting from Irongate to klamathon bridge and also new water down by Happy Camp. We plan on mostly indicator nymphing but I will also have my spey rod to try a little swingin when the water warms up later in the day. I'll post a report on monday.
See ya

The Klamath was slow last weekend. Friday my friend and I drifted Irongate dam to Klamathon bridge. We got two halfpounders. Saturday we drifted China point to Indian Creek down river near Happy Camp. What a beautiful drift down a forested canyon with greenery and moss everywhere. We landed a bunch of halfpounders and resident trout But one fish was a big fat wild pig, picture will be posted whe my buddy sends them to me. Sunday we fished the upper river again and we got one 18" half pounder.
The weather was nice 20 degrees to 51, sunny, minimal wind, and no fog.
We need rain.
Thursday I fished the lower sac on my favorite runs between Red Bluff and anderson. I landed five or six the biggest was around 20". All were big, fat and feisty. Lost two big ones on a bent Prince nymph... damn, I need to check my flies more often.
I'll post picture later

I added the picture above. Caught with #4 black rubber legs on 3x tippet and 6wt rod.

Oof, what a hog. Quite a feat to land a fish like that on a 6wt with 3X. Way to go, Lynn. Must've been a thrill to hold that fish, knowing that just a week or two ago he was cruising the deep, suckin down squid.
