Nice fish. You were fishing at night? Lake or river?

My finger was under the gill plate but was not in the rakes at all. In fact I tried very hard to NOT touch the rakes, but the fish was very much alive and was very strong. I didnt want him to fall on the ground. Dont know if that is a good enough excuse or not. I can tell you that when I put him back into the water he was ready and he swam off with a lot of force. I watched him for about 20 feet and he was totally fine.
This is a river system that I fish. The Kokanee from the lake that the river feeds into run up the river every year about the first or second week in October. The big browns follow right behind them. Not sure if it is just because they spawn about the same time or if it is because they are eating the Kokes as they head upriver to spawn. Probably a combintion of both. Anyway, I have some more pics but this was the biggest so far. Thanks guys,
Jared

For future reference, it is best not to put your finger anywhere near a fish's gills. If you touch the gills, it may not immediately harm the fish. It might swim off and appear fine, but later it may have difficulty breathing.

To get a good picture you can cradle the fish by putting one hand right in front of the tail and the other hand just behind the pectoral fins (the fins right behind the head). I have attached an example below.

By the way, that was a really nice fish.

For the record I useually do not ever put my finger in the gill plate. I agree I could have done a better job and I will be more aware next time. Here is the useual way I take pictures of my fish. This time I wanted to be in the pic, and he was big enough were I didnt think much of it becasue of the room.

Maybe we should have another board for political discussion. I say leave the politics outta the sig line and posts. I have to agree with Mr.B and Phil, but at the same time choose to ignore ignorance!

It would be nice though if people kept there political views off of a non-political site. It is just common courtesy. This is a fly fishing site lets try to keep it that way.
