I have not been seeing any reports for the American and was wondering if there is any action. I will be there tomorrow and possibly Wednesday depending on tomorrow.

I was out twice last week. Didn't tie any new flies though.
Friday I met my old friend Ty from LP and we fished a secret spot in the wind. Nothing to speak of, but a few fish were hitting the surface. Ty did most of the fishing and I did most of the watching.
Saturday evening I fished the riffle below this secret spot, alone. I hooked into a good fish that promtly took me down stream and straightend out my #16 soft hackle brassie on a nice jump. The fish looked to be around 20-24". I like fishing that pattern when the mayflies are hatching, but more times than not if I hook a good fish the hook bends.
I worked down the run and had a solid grab and a few head shakes before the fish parted my 3x leader. On that fish I had a #14 burnt orange fox pupa on the 3x and a #16 soft hackle dubbed fly at the point tied to 4x.
After these two fish I went upstream above the riffle, swithced to a caddis emerger with fox pupa dropper and watched the flat for risers. I only saw a couple and did't get any takes. There was a little wind, but not as bad as Friday.
Good luck.

Hey Scott!
I'm still batting 0.000 percent on the A. Fished Lower Sunrise and Lower Sailor Bar Saturday morning and didn't get a bump. The water was way too low. I fished another river Sunday morning and got a fat 20" hatchery hen. Post a report if you do go out this week.

Sorry to hear you are not getting them on the American Jeff. Question for you or anyone else, how do I tell the difference between a male and female? Is there a simple way to see.

I was thinking about heading out to the American to see if I could not find myself one of these half pounders, but from the sounds of the reports here, I might think about hitting another river. What do you fellas think?

MikeN..good to see you had a bit of excitement. Thanks again for the all the flies and taking me under your wing per se...learned a lot and had a good time.
I went out Sunday morning @ ...pretty windy conditions. saw a few riser early morning and swung several different pattern nymphs, however, no grabs. I take that back...a strong wind gust turned my fly on me and caught my cap...good thing I pinched the barb and worn protective sunglasses. Still learning the ropes...the hardway :-) After 9AM no more risers.
I did see Charlie G. drift down past me in his new boat with a couple clients...look like they were throwing steamers...not sure how they did? Looked like a fun time though.
In closing, no success to report.
I drove over Watt this morning and it looks really fishy.

ook one 14 incher in the rifflles above the Watt Ave. bridge this morning. Small for your typical half pounder. Had to wade very deep for it. Think the water is still too warm.

What is the water temp now on the Lower A?

64 degrees at Nimbus this morning according to Dreamflows. I'm going out this evening. I want to try out a new killer fly on the A.

64 degrees at Watt Wednesday night with no activity. Phil and I left after sunset with the sweet aroma of skunk. The caddis hatch was barely even there, and we only saw or should I say heard 2 rises so not sure of what type of fish it was. Compared to last year this is really sad, not only the lack of halfpounders but the lack of a caddis hatch. Also there was hardly any dragonfly, birds, or bats flying around eating the caddis. This lack of rain to fill our reservoirs is really starting to show in so many different ways. One more dry year and we are truly screwed. And with a good percentage of our water going down south we will need it to start raining today and not stop til the end of May. But if that happens most of Sacramento will be under water.

Got this beauty last night after 2.5 months of trying. There was a big mayfly hatch and a few caddis where I was fishing. Got her on a Jeff F. inspired biot body FBPT. Jeff C.
