View Full Version : Grooves in your fly reel's line guard?

Do you have grooves cut into the line guard at the bottom of your fly reel?

It is because you strip your line off at an extreme angle which causes your fly lines to wear out at an extremely accelerated rates.

If it's a used reel the former owner might have caused these grooves.

For years I would get complaints from a few angles who would be wearing out the running line on their fly line in less than one season.

Sometimes it is just from fishing a ton with one line but in many cases it is the fact that the angle is stripping his line off the reel back against the reel's line guard at the bottom of the reel.

The only solution for this person was to alter the way they stripped the line off the reel by stripping it out forward.

In some cases these were very famous fly fishers and even a few fly fishing guides.

Another problem is that using a cracked fly line will cut grooves in the bottoms of your tip top and snake guides.

Check for wear there because that will also ruin your new fly line.

I hope my descriptions here were understandable....

your discriptions were great and very informative i will have to watch for that...

I know i stand on my line a lot witch dose it no good at all (it's not kevlar.....hmm???)

I also use braided loops just to help my snake guides weare out sooner ha,ha

I would love two fish enough to weare out a fly rod before i broke it
