I've been fishing lower yuba for several years now and really enjoy this river. I have had some good results nymphing but no results swinging with or without tips. I have tried lots of different flies at different times of the year and still the bagel persists. Anyone have any suggestions on flies or technique that might help?

If you see splashy rises, put on a Birds Nest or Hare's ear using a floating line and swing them.

Egg sucking leeches can be good now using a sink-tip when swung. Later on try a silver & olive streamer to imitate the newly emerged smolts or a black leech.

I know some swing #10 olive Zonker streamer or an olive Leech on a sink-tip at times.

Swinging #14/16 caddis emergers in the PM should work too.

Hi, I've caught a few nice fish swinging a muddler minnow on a floating line. They were decent trout, not steelhead, but it's a lot of fun on a light rod.

Most of the fish I caught this year on the yuba (only fished twice) came on the swing. I was indicator nymphing with a green fox's pupah, nothing on the drift, but at the end WHAM! They were trout I think, though I wonder if they might have been half pounders (very bright, sleek, and ran, jumped, and pulled, like the dickens).

So you might try swinging some small #14 buggy looking patterns like a birds nest and see what happens. Once from sierra trading post I got a fly (nominally an orvis pattern I think) that was basically like a fox's pupah, but had very fine rubber hackle collar, that had great action on the swing.

Good luck!
