John Daniels is heavily involved teaching fly tying at the 'California Fly Fishers Unlimited' club in Sacramento and the 'Fly Fishers of Davis' club in Davis, CA.

We coerced him to do some classes for us at the shop this fall and winter too.

***Anyone taking these classes will get a 10% discount on tools, DVDs, books and materials for the classes.

Beginning Fly Tying Class

Learning to tie flies is both fun and easy. You will complete your first fly by the end of the first session, and with each subsequent class, your skills will develop further. By the end of the course, you will be well on your way to mastering the basics of fly tying.

The class will include discussions of materials, tools, and patterns. A total five fly patterns will be covered, nymphs and dries. Attendees must bring their own tools (see list below) and thread, but all other materials will be provided by the instructor. Each class has three sessions and is limited to a maximum of six students.

Cost: $75 for 3 nights

Required tools list:

fly tying vise
bobbin
scissors
half-hitch tool and/or whip finisher
hair stacker
hackle pliers
6/0 black thread

Class dates:

Wednesdays, January 7th, 14th, & 21st, 2009 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Wednesdays, February 4th, 11th, & 18th, 2009 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Bill, how do we reserve a spot? Contact John or set it up with you? Count me in for November.

Hi JB,

I think I would email John directly.

We are excited that John is going to run our classes this winter.

The November class has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

Hopefully, we'll be able to get a few more folks for the January class.

That's too bad. I assume the 3 dates in January represent 3 sessions of 1 class, with the total cost of attending all 3 sessions $75? Maybe folks thought $75 was for only one 3-hour session on one day? Just trying to understand why there weren't more signups. . . . Seems to me $75 for 3 sessions is quite reasonable to learn from a seasoned instructor. Sure would accelerate the learning curve compared to the trial-and-error-self-instruction some of us went through.

The January class is now finished and we only have 1 student signed up so far for the February class.

The February class that starts next week only has one student signed up so far. If anyone else is interested please let me know as soon as possible, because I'm afraid we're going to have to cancel this class if we can't get at least a couple more students.

If we do have to cancel, there may be an opportunity for a March make up class on the first three Wednesday nights (3/4, 3/11, 3/18 ).

Last chance for a beginning fly tying class before the season begins at Kiene's! March will probably be the last time this class will be offered this year, so if you are interested in learning to tie, drop me a line (jedaniels@ucdavis.edu ).

You made some good points there.
